A vape mod is a bigger and more powerful version of a vape pen, which is lightweight, portable, and has no customizable options. A vape mod often contains one or two removable high-drain batteries and has advanced electronic chipsets to give users more control over their vaping experience. Vape mods use separate tanks or liquid atomizers that attach to the primary device through a 510-threaded connection.

Here’s a list of the very best regulated vape mods. We focussed on several areas in our ranking structure. The three top-rated vape mods on the list are perfect for real-world, everyday vaping and offer exceptional long-term value. Our top mods come as complete kits, including batteries.
As you move further into the list, you will find specialty vape mods of all types. Since we chose only the top performers, you won’t notice a lot of cons, although we’ll mention any weaknesses that any particular mod has.
It’s important to understand what mAh means when buying a box mod. First, the mAh can give a good indication of how long the cell will last. For instance, a 1 Amp mod would get roughly two and a half hours of vaping with this size battery.
The VooPoo Drag 3 is a durable vape mod that is an improvement over the last two models. It puts out 177 watts and has a magnificent appearance that will appeal to everyone. Plus, it has Smart and Bypass mode, giving vapers more options for enhancing their vape sessions.
This kit includes a fully intuitive TPP Vape Tank and provides immense levels of clouds and flavor. In addition, it has high juice capacity and ultra-low sub-ohm coils.
Thanks to its portability and features, the Aegis Legend 2 delivers an intense and satisfying vaping experience. It puts out 200 watts and uses dual 18650s. These dual batteries give vapers plenty of vaping time.
Plus, it has an IP68 rating, which means it is super durable and weather-resistant.
To surmise, it is reliable, durable, and hard-hitting!
Here is a powerful mod and tank combined in the ultimate starter kit. This vape has 230 Watt output, and its tank has some of the highest capacity on the market. Its high capacity makes it perfect for this high wattage mod.
This vape also has an IP67 rating. In addition, it is shock, dust, and water-resistant. This rating means this vape is excellent for people who work and play in outdoor environments.
Even though a vape mod is in a category all by itself, there are also distinctions between vape mods themselves. For example, a tube mod is not the same as a box mod, and a box mod is not the same as a mechanical mod, etc. There are differences between all these devices; they are essential to know because not everyone can use the more advanced models.
A box mod is so-called because of its shape and design, which is four-sided and resembles a typical box. These devices come in two parts – the mod or battery section and the atomizer or tank that contains the e-liquid – and they often use single or dual 18650 batteries as their power source, giving them their distinctive shape.
The Vaporesso Target 100 is a single-battery vape mod that can take a single 21700 or 18650 cell. The Target has a slim, sleek outer build and a 0.96” TFT display that lets users control the many different features installed on the chip. The mod also comes paired with the Vaporesso iTank, which has a 5ml e-juice capacity and two GTi-mesh coils. The vape has a high-power output of 100W and has Type-C charging capabilities.
The VooPoo Drag X Pro combines an advanced vaping device and a starter kit since it has lowered capacity but still has many customization features. The vape is another single-cell mod that can take a 21700 or 18650 cell, so it has a slim, svelte shape. The exterior has ergonomic features like a curved back wrapped in faux leather. The Drag X Pro is also a pod device that also has a 5ml pod that can take removable coils, two of which are included in the kit.
The Voopoo Argus GT 2 is a dual-18650 vape with various vaping outputs and a sleek and elegant design. The Argus GT 2 is an updated version of the original device and now comes with the GENE.TT 2.0 gives users new vaping outputs like Turbo Mode and enables faster charging with a dynamic charging interface. The Argus 2 is also IP69 certified, meaning it is waterproof and will not damage if immersed in water.
Tube mods take their name from the fact that they look like cylindrical tubes and contain an internal battery that is not removable. These mods are usually large and heavy and have straightforward controls that often consist of a single button and an LED. The battery section also has a 510-threaded connection at the top to attach the device.
The Vaporesso GTX GO 80 is a potent and hefty tube mod with an internal 3000mAh battery and works with a 5ml e-juice pod. The GTX GO 80 is a device with a single operating button on its front with an LED around it that designates battery level and power settings. In addition, the vape has a small airflow adjustment vent on the bottom of the pod so users can adjust the airflow. The unit also comes with Type-C charging and has a magnetic pod connection.
1 x GTX GO 80 Battery
1 x GTX POD 26 (5ml)
1 x GTX 0.2ohm MESH COIL
1 x Type-C USB Cable
1 x User Manual
1 x Warranty Card
Good battery life Excellent vapor production Easy-to-use No leak pods
The SMOK V2 vape pen is a starter device with an internal 1600mAh battery that can output up to 60W of power. The tube mod also has a regulator chip inside loaded with safety features like an 8-second cut-off and battery protection. In addition, the vape comes with a refillable, 5ml tank with a 0.15ohm coil to support both direct lung and mouth-to-lung vaping.
A “squonk” mod, aka bottom-feeder, is a mod with the e-juice tank or reservoir inside the mod itself next to the batteries. Typically, vape mods use a tank or atomizer that sits on the device’s exterior from which users inhale the vapor. But a squonk mod sends e-juice to an atomizer inside the vape when users squeeze or “squonk” the e-juice bottle to saturate the above coils.
The Lost Vape Centaurus Quest BF Squonk is an innovative, bottom-feeding vape that pairs a DNA mod with a new style of squonk bottle. The squonk bottle not only serves as an e-juice reservoir but also a storage container for excess e-juice. The mod supports three different types of batteries from 21700, 20700, and 18650 and has a maximum power output of 100W. The unit also features the brand new DNA chipset, the Quest 2.0, which features many different vaping outputs.
The Wotofo Profile Squonk mod is a one-of-a-kind vape because it can work as a squonk or a regular box mod. The device features a zinc alloy and plastic build but has a durable and lightweight feel. The Profile can take either a single 18650 battery (in squonk mode) or two 18650 (in regular box mod mode), and it uses a 7ml bottle as its internal e-juice reservoir. The vape mod can output up to 80W of power as a squonk and 200W as a regular box mod.
The Vandy Vape Requiem BF is a squonking mod with a 6ml internal juice reservoir and a compatible RBA device. The juice reservoir can hook up directly into the RBA, or users can fill the tank from the side or into the opening at the top. The Requiem features a zinc-alloy exterior and takes a single 18650 battery as its primary power source. The mod works like an unregulated mod as there are no internal electronics or control panels, so it uses the direct voltage of the battery.
A DNA vape mod is in a class among vaping enthusiasts since “DNA” is the name of the chipset produced by the Evolve company, which is among the most advanced chipsets in vaping. The level of customization, power, and versatility of the DNA chipset has made it one of the most recognizable names in vaping. Many brands use a DNA chipset in their modes, while Lost Vape is the most common vape maker that uses the DNA chipset.
The Lost Vape Hyperion DNA is one of the original DNA devices and features an exquisitely made, all-zinc exterior and an IP68 waterproof design. The Hyperion can also take multiple battery types as it is suited to accommodate 20700, 21700, and 18650 cells. It takes only a single battery, so its exterior is slim and very ergonomic. The device can reach a high-power output of 100W and features several innovative vaping outputs based on the DNA chipset inside.
1 x Hyperion DNA 100C Box Mod
1 x Hyperion DNA 100C Badge
1 x Type-C charging cable
1 x 18650 Battery Adaptor
1 x User Manual
Several different vape modes (replay mode, boost mode)
The Dovpo Top Gear is a dual-18650 vape with the most advanced DNA chipset, the 250C. The Top Gear has an all-aluminum alloy construction and features a powerful 200W maximum power output. The device also has multiple vaping outputs ranging from wattage mode to temperature control for nickel, stainless steel, and titanium. The unit also has a 510-threaded connection up top and a three-button control panel with a 0.96” TFT screen.
Mechanical mods carry that name because they do not have any electronics or regulating boards in their design. This means they use the battery’s full power installed, which can be dangerous if a user does not understand basic battery safety and Ohm’s law. In addition, mechanical mods may look simple since they have no screens or controls, but they can be dangerous if not handled properly.
The Tesla Punk 86W mod is a mech mod but not a full one, as it contains a regulator chip and internal electronics that offers a level of customization and safety. The Tesla Punk has a maximum power output of 86W and has a sleek, all-metal exterior in the shape of a mech mod tube. The device uses a single 18650 as its power source, and there is a small 0.49” OLED at the base of the unit to give users control over the wattage and to check battery levels.
The Timesvape Dreamer V1.5 mechanical mod features a reversible design so it can be turned around and used from either side. The mod can work with either 20700, 21700, or a regular 18650 power cell and features a tapered design with its widest point at the bottom (27mm) and the narrowest point at the top (25mm). The mod also has an all-copper contact at the top that makes a seamless connection to any 510 since it has a hybrid 510 connector.
High wattage mods are those mods that can output at least 100W of power or more. The highest commercial mods can output around 220W and often require at least two or three 18650 batteries. High-wattage mods are characterized by their need for a large power source and an outsized shape. They are not the most portable mods and are more heavy-duty, with some devices being waterproof, shock-proof, and dust-resistant. High-wattage mods are geared toward people who want the most amount of vapor from their mods rather than those who want a discreet, portable device.
The Vaporesso Gen 200 is a dual-18650 device that can push up to 220W and features a compact, lightweight construction with a colorful, 0.96” TFT screen in its center. In addition, the device features a front control panel with the TFT screen and three selector buttons underneath. The Gen 200 comes with the AXON 2.0 chipset and features such advanced vaping options as wattage, temperature control, and pulse mode.
The Vaporesso Target 200 is a dual-18650 vape mod that features the AXON chipset 2.0 and comes with a sub-ohm tank. The Target 200 has a maximum power output of 220W and a solidly built exterior wrapped in comfortable metal accents. The vape has a large 0.96” TFT, so users can adjust their settings, engage any of the mod’s many different features like the FIT mode, or set it to its highest wattage setting. In addition, there are two DL coils in the kit that users can swap out of the 8ml e-juice tank.
Portable, or small mods, are vaping devices characterized by their miniature size and ease of use. Portable mods have internal, non-removable batteries and are meant to be draw-activated, but some models have buttons and variable settings. Portable mods sometimes have very little to customize since they are meant to be user-friendly, but others have different inhalation methods, airflow adjustment controls, and removable coils or pods. Since they do not have large power sources, small mods are more suited to people who want a mouth-to-lung experience emphasizing flavor and not cloud size.
The SMOK IPX80 is a powerful, portable mod with an internal 3000mAh battery and can output up to 80W of power. Apart from the internal capacities of the device, it also has outstanding build quality. The IPX80 has a zinc-alloy construction that makes it durable and lightweight, while the silicone-sealed vape makes it waterproof, dust resistant, and shock-proof. In addition, the device has a single firing button and a 0.96” TFT so users can access the device’s internal features.
The Vaporesso Target PM80 is a sophisticated pod device with an internal 2000mAh battery and a 4ml refillable pod. The vape mod also comes with the AXON chipset inside, which gives the vape mod many advanced features like three separate vaping modes (Pulse, Power, Eco) and allows the vape to output up to 80W of power. The Target PM80 also features a 0.96” TFT display that gives users access to all the device’s controls and functions. In addition, users can install any of the two coils included in the kit – a GTX 0.2ohm and a GTX 0.4ohm coil – to change the vaping experience.
A vape mod is defined by the fact that it is more significant than most regular vape pens.
Vape mods have:
LED control panels
These are the most basic elements that make up a typical vape mod. Other defining characteristics of box mods are their capacity and performance. These devices have the power and electronics to reach high temperatures and high wattage outputs, creating unique vaping experiences.
The customization available on these devices is what attracts people to them. They like that they can adjust the temperature of a vape to a specific degree or find a sweet spot for the power output of their vape. They also enjoy the customization that comes from using a different coil head in the tank or atomizer, which can affect vapor flavor and quality.
What Vape Mod Is Right for You?
It depends on what the shopper wants and his or her experience level. A beginner vaper should find something simple and easy to use. Disposable vapes meet those descriptions. Disposable vapes come pre-filled with e-liquid and are turned on by inhaling the mouthpiece. Vapor is automatically produced, and the vaper gets a nicotine fix. When the e-liquid is depleted, the vape is thrown out. The next kind of vape is a pod mod.
Pod mods are a little more complex and come with pre-filled disposable or refillable pods. Some have pods with replaceable coils. Also, most have adjustable wattage settings. After pod mods, there are regulated box mods and tube mods.
The main difference between box and tube mods is their shape. One is shaped like a box, while the other is like a tube. Tube mods are more comfortable to hold and carry. Regulated mods have a screen and a chip allowing for adjustable wattage and various settings. Also, they come with a tank that uses coils inserted into the bottom.
Unregulated box and tube mods have no adjustable settings, and the power goes straight to the coils from the battery. As a result, they are more challenging to use than regulated mods, but they produce higher vapor levels. However, there are mods out there for everyone, so new vapers should not worry too much about not being able to find a suitable kit.
How To Use or Clean a Vape Mod
Using a vape mod is second nature to most vapers, and it is not difficult to get started if you are a beginner. New vapers usually begin with the easiest-to-use vape: a disposable. These devices are already pre-filled and precharged, so users need to only inhale. But other devices require a little assembly or filling the tank with e-juice, which is also not hard to grasp.
But depending on the mod – e-juice, dry herb, wax – they may have different maintenance and cleaning requirements. E-juice mods do not require much cleaning, but the tanks and atomizers used with e-juice need some upkeep to keep them in good working condition. Most vapers empty their tanks and take them apart to clean each piece individually.
Dry herb vapes need almost constant upkeep since grinding, loading, and unloading a dry herb vape makes a mess. However, every dry herb vaporizer does come with cleaning utensils like a wire brush or loading tool to make the job easier. The heat from dry herb vapes can help, too, since users leave their devices on to remove any sticky, stubborn residue from the oven itself.
The Advantages of Vape Mods
What are the advantages of a box mod vape? The simple answer is power and control. The best vape mods are designed to put power and control in your hands so you can dial in your ideal vaping experience. Of course, mods are larger than typical e-cigarettes and can be more complex to use, but you are trading up for performance. Vaping satisfaction and vapor production are the end goal.
Customize your personal vaping experience
Another box mod vape advantage is the enormous range of choices available to you. The competition for the best vape mod is intense. Do you know who wins that competition? You and me, that’s who. We do. The consumers. The vaping industry is where the free markets work because no one has a monopoly.
Mods With Built-In Battery vs. Separate Battery
Mods can either come with removable batteries or those already installed and are non-removable. Depending on who you speak to, either setup has advantages and disadvantages. One of the main draws of a device with removable batteries is that it can run continuously.
Users can simply remove the spent batteries and replace them with fresh batteries. But this means buying other batteries, a charger, etc., and knowing more about battery safety, storage, proper usage, etc. Some people are willing to put in the effort and expense to get these extras, but some prefer having a battery inside and charging it in the device. Some devices have pass-through charging, which means you can still use it while the battery is charging, but it is not always a feature you can find on a mod.
How To Charge a Vape Mod Battery?
To charge a built-in, internal box mod cell, simply connect the mod to a USB port. It will take two to three hours to charge fully, depending on the battery capacity.
Charging your separate 18650 vape batteries is a different matter.
The vast majority of the best box mods all have a port that you can connect the device to a USB for charging.
We do not recommend charging your vape batteries inside your mod. It is better to use an external battery charger.
A separate vape battery charger will charge your batteries faster, balanced, and more efficiently.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are mods better than pens?
No, because it all depends on what the customer wants. Disposable vape pens are easy to use, making them better for beginner vapers.
Box and tube mods are better suited for vapers who have been doing this for a while and want more than just a nicotine fix. Mods have various settings that make them more fun to vape. Disposables do not have those settings.
How Long Do Vape Mods Last?
Disposables only last a couple of weeks, sometimes less. The same goes for many refillable and pre-filled pods.
A box mod with an integrated battery can last longer, but eventually, the battery starts to degrade. Unless the battery can be replaced, the entire vape will be useless.
The advantage of vapes that use 18650/20700/21700 batteries is that these are replaceable. So the vape can be used as long as the batteries are available or unless it breaks.
How much does a vape mod cost?
A vape mod can cost anywhere from $10 to $90 depending on the model, brand, type, and design. A disposable vape can start as low as $5, but more advanced models typically cost more and can run into the $50 or even $80 range. The price of a mod varies depending on its build quality, materials, and internal electronics, but none of it means they perform better than cheaper mods.
What to do with old vape mods?
Vape mods are electronic, battery-powered devices that can leak dangerous chemicals into the environment if not disposed of properly. Of course, you should always recycle batteries and electronics responsibly, but a mod can also be donated or gifted to someone who wants to try vaping, preferably an adult smoker.
How to pack a vape mod for flying?
You should never put batteries, e-juice, or any vaping device in your checked luggage (the luggage that goes in the plane’s cargo hold) since anything can happen during the flight. However, it is recommended to bring any vaping accessories (batteries, mods, e-juice) in your carry-on luggage, where you can keep an eye on them.
Wrapping Up Our Box Mods Guide
The vape mods are devices that look like a box! Some box mods are extremely elegant. “Regulated” means several customizable settings that allow you to adjust wattage, voltage, and temperature to find your perfect vaping experience. Most vape mods on this list work with 18650 batteries.
Choosing the best box mods can be very confusing. There is a huge variety, and they all generally look the same. It’s what is inside that counts. There are too many low-quality units using poor quality materials and flawed firmware. We have compiled a list of the best vape mods in different categories. Regardless of your vaping experience or needs, you’ll find something that fits the bill.

I just want to point out a mistake in your review in the very first entry….
you list it as the VooPoo Drag 2 then go on to to discribe the Drag 3 which is correct in the way that it is the newest but your title and image is wrong and isn’t what you are reviewing

thank you, Andrew. We’re working on this misunderstanding

This is the most interesting and concise vape review I’ve read.
I stopped smoking after buying a cheap Kangertech, which is a perfectly good vape, but integrated battery.
I wanted to upgrade and this blog helped me understand the vape world.
I ended up buying a Geek Vape Aegis Solo 100w.
Real pleased with it and thank you for making this a lot easier!

I currently am using Vuse Alto and want to buy a more affordable and larger vaporizer or mod, an ejuice nicotine large volume tank, and large nicotine bottle with high nicotine amount.
Could you offer several choices for each so I can get my cost per kg of nicotine down substantially with value?

Is the Smok morph 219 really water resistant? if so ipx-7,6, or 5? no where on packaging or manual does it mention water proof or even splash proof, or resistance to dust or drops?

Great review! I saw you had the gclass listed as the top mood for dual battery and yes I have one they are awesome but I didn’t see the single mod sl class listed that goes up to 100 watts and can use 18650, 20700, and 21700 watt batteries. I’m currently using the carbon fiber one. Would love to see your review on it. My only con would be that it eats batteries for breakfast doesn’t matter what size you put in there and some of the 21700 don’t want to go in but the Samsungs fit perfect.

Amazing! Its genuinely amazing article, I have got much clear idea about from this paragraph.

4 years behind the counter of a vape shop must have me in a different league. I didn’t see dotmod at all, not even Voopoo Drag or and geekvape aegis legend or any Vandy stuff. If you just haven experienced it you need to. It’s impossible to make a list of the best mods without having the dotmod (widely regarded as the best hands down) and the Voopoo Drag (fastest ramp up time of any .025 seconds)

I am fairly new to vaping, and my lack of knowledge has made it difficult for me to choose devices, so up until now it’s simply been trial and error, I have tried researching online and it is also been a challenge finding a website that is informative as well as easy to navigate through, a lot of websites are written in such a way that u almost need a degree in vaping and it’s lingo to get anything at all helpful from the sites, this site is completely the opposite i could read everything with ease and not only could I read it, I could understand it, so to the website creators, well done u have achieved a bloody good website

Woah, great stuff! Thanks so much for getting this all together in one place for new and experienced vapers alike! The only things I see missing are squonk mods. Maybe for the next one 😉

I bought a smok mag and spent $85 on it. I had it for a month and I never dropped it but when I went to change me coil and juice I took the tank off and the little piece that connects the tank to the mod just fell out. I WILL NEVER BUY A SMOK AGAIN
Rooster CogburnJune 16, 2018 at 10:53 pm
In best overall box mod you have 3 Smok mods and 2 Halo. I’ve been vaping for 5+ years and I’ve never even heard of Halo and I’ve had enough Smok mods (2) to know their mission is to pump out as many garbage mods they can to maximize profits. I’m sorry but having a list like this destroys all your credibility. I hope this comment gets posted and stays up because new vapers need to know to avoid the mods on your best of list. Want a good mod? Buy a Smoant, Voopoo, Vaporesso, or Tesla. Smoant has not put out a bad mod in the last two years at least, before that I didn’t know about them so…. any of the brands listed make good mods. Hopefully you were able to read this to save yourself money. Smok makes decent tanks but their mods are hit or miss with tons of misses and customer service is a joke. Good luck to all you future vapers on quitting the cigs. On a side note, don’t buy super expensive stuff because the industry moves so fast, a year on and your gear is obsolete sometimes.

How much is a g-priv2 worth
Stephen FarrisDecember 4, 2018 at 3:06 pm
I have owned several Smok mods, they look nice and have many features, but after little time they turn out to be trash. However the best Smok mod I have ever owned is the the g-priv 2.

What about vboy 200w. The same tecnólogy of gx mini and very best price. The best for my.
AllysunMay 21, 2018 at 9:10 am
I purchased Smok procolour and have had only 2mths. Problem…….leaking into battery compartment. Wonder if the person in USA who died from exploding batteries while vaping might of had the same issue. Either way it is faulty as you should never have this kind of issue. Smoke engineers need to do much, much better. Also battery compartment opening latch very flimsy plus flip opening to refill ejuice. Retailer says I have to pay to send it back…ummm!! Its very expensive to set up and maintain all involved in vaping …so research very carefully, people. Having said all that I instantly never smoked another cigarette which is excellent…..but have all the issues of buying ALL the myrid of stuff you need to maintain vaping.

I bought a GeekVape Aegis 100 Watt in October of 2017. It got knocked off of my kitchen table once and the screws that hold the silver plate where the connection to the tank is stripped and it hasn’t functioned properly since. That was about 2 weeks after I bought it. It was sold to me by Jayde’s Vapor Lounge in Muscatine, Iowa as being very durable. It wasn’t. The Uwell Crown 3 tank I bought was not damaged, but the “durable” GeekVape Aegis 100 Watt mod couldn’t even take a 3 foot drop on to linoleum. I bought it because I thought it would be durable enough to use at the mill I work in, but my eleaf iStick 100 mod has lasted about 3 years with no trouble and has been dropped on concrete from multiple heights and is still working fine. Maybe I just got a defective one, but Jayde’s Vapor Lounge wouldn’t swap it out or help me locate new screws. For as much money as I spend on that thing I can’t express enough how irritated I was and continue to be by that purchase. My cousin has the exact same mod and his has taken a lot of abuse and is still fine. I want a durable mod but I think this one isn’t as durable as it is being portrayed.

That’s totally unlucky for you dude. I got my second aegis for almost 6 months now. My first one got knocked off from a second floor veranda hitting a solid concrete floor. Broke the side plates and the atomizer but the mod worked like brand new. If only it wasn’t stolen i would still be using the thing.

Summary: I dropped my vape on the ground and it broke and it was my fault and im mad about it.

It may be too late now but call geekvape. Your local B&M not replacing it is total B.S. I would never spent another dime there and let them know why. I’ve seen the Aegis stand up too incredible abuse but maybe your hit just right. 1 in a million type thing. But it sounds like yours was defective. Geekvape will make it right I bet. Good luck to you

I have the new aegis legend although it’s not the 100 but it’s pretty much the same thing as yours but bigger. But I’ve dropped it many times and the only thing that broke was the glass of the tank. It’s taken some incredible abuse. And my wife has the same one as you and it’s had more than it’s share of drops the most recent was when she left it on the hood of her Denali suv and it fell off the hood as she pulled out of the garage and was fine given some scratches. I think yours might be defective as you suggested. I would contact the company and regarding your vape store.. Never do business with them ever again except leave a bad review with a explanation.

Can I get a little help here?
I use nothing but 510 cartridges with some thin oils but mostly thick.
A buddy showed me his davinci 3 with temperature control over the course of one hit. The idea is to maximize the entourage effect.
Can anyone point me to a comparable box of mini box mod out there?
