For the ultimate power, customization, and vapor production, vape mods are the way to go. On this page, we are reviewing the best available vape mods.
Here’s a list of the very best regulated box mods. We focussed on several areas in our ranking structure. The four top-rated vape mods on the list are perfect for real-world, everyday vaping and offer exceptional long-term value. Our top four best box mods all come as complete kits including batteries.
As you move further into the list, you will find specialty box mods of all types. Since we chose only the top performers, you won’t notice a lot of cons, although we’ll mention any weaknesses that any particular mod has.
It’s important to understand what mAh actually means when buying a box mod. The mAh can give a good indication of how long the cell will last. For instance, a 1 Amp mod would get roughly 2 and a half hours of vaping with this size battery.

What are Vape Mods?
Old-school regulated box mods come in two forms: variable voltage and variable wattage. Both types are usually confused as the same, but there are differences. Before explaining the differences between the two, it’s important to understand how watts (or power), volts, current (or amps), and resistances (or ohms) interact.
There are formulas to determine each variable – known as Ohm’s Law – and they are:
Voltage (V) = Current (I) x Resistance (R)
or
Power (P) = Voltage (V) x Current (I)
While you can calculate manually for each, there are Ohm’s law calculators you can use online to make things easier for you. That being said, determining your sweet spot means knowing how many watts your preferred vape is. If your perfect vape is achieved by using a 2.2-ohm atomizer at 4.2 volts, the power you’re getting is equal to 8 watts.
When using a variable voltage device with a 2.2-ohm atomizer, simply adjust the voltage to 4.2 volts to achieve your sweet spot.
To achieve the same 8 watts with a 1.4-ohm atomizer, the voltage needs to be adjusted down to 3.3 volts.
Things are simpler for variable wattage. Using the above example, if your sweet spot is at 8 watts, you simply adjust the wattage of the device to 8 watts and the mod will adjust voltage accordingly. It doesn’t matter if you use a 2.5 ohm or a 0.5-ohm atomizer. Once wattage has been set, you’ll get your perfect vape every time. Based on these facts, variable wattage devices are true “set it and forget it” vapes.
Regulated Box Mods Vs. Mech Mods
Box vape mods are now more often preferred over mechanical mods. Many variable wattage mods can match the power outputs of other, more capable, mechanical mods that are on the market today. This preference over mechanical mods is because box mods are easier to use and maintain and are built with various safety features, such as short circuit protection, reverse battery protection, thermal protection, and automatic cutoffs, which prevent accidental fires inside the pocket or purse.
Even though box mods are safer than mechanical mods, they still need to be handled with care. All the reports of exploding mods are either because they were mechanical mods with no circuitry or there was damage to the cell due to mishandling.
Now, if you looked at our vape mods reviews above, you may have noticed that we mentioned several of them offer a “bypass” mode. Bypass mode will make a box mod work like a mech mod. Drippers will have an option to use the best box mods as a mech if they so wish. For most vapers, we recommend taking advantage of the precision control of today’s top-rated vape mods.
What Kind of Batteries Do Box Mods Use?
There are several types of batteries used in box mods. The various sizes are 18650, the most common by far, 20600, 20700, or 21700. The most common vape batteries you will see sold in stores are:
Lithium IMR or Li-Mn
IMR/Hybrid
Protected ICR Li-Ion
There is also another – LiPo batteries – but these are used as internal batteries. These are not safe chemistry, and protection depends on the circuitry of the mod. One might hear this name thrown about in vaping circles, but since these are not used as removable batteries, this type will not be discussed in-depth.
Lithium IMR and IMR/Hybrid batteries are safe chemistry, and these are recommended for use with mods. While Protected ICR Li-Ion batteries can still be found, these are not recommended and are considered obsolete.
Both types of IMR batteries are “high drain”, and while also called “unprotected,” they are also “safe chemistry” meaning they will not explode or light up under stress.
Instead, they vent gas. These make them the most popular types of batteries vapers use for their mods. However, Lithium IMR types have a lesser capacity compared to ICR batteries. However, IMRs work best when the maximum load current is required.
The IMR/Hybrid batteries, on the other hand, have the same safe chemistry make up as Lithium IMRs but with more capacity. It is the newest type and the one most recommended by users. It renders obsolete both the ICR Protected and Lithium IMR batteries in one fell swoop. Some e-cig manufacturers (like MigVapor) sell special e-cig batteries that are ready to be connected to the vape tank of your choice.
What Vape Mod Is Right for You?
It depends on what the shopper wants and his or her experience level.
A beginner vaper should find something simple and easy to use. Disposable vapes meet those descriptions.
Disposable vapes come pre-filled with e-liquid, and they are turned on by inhaling on the mouthpiece. Vapor is automatically produced, and the vaper gets a nicotine fix. When the e-liquid is depleted, the device is thrown out.
The next kind of vape is a pod mod.
Pod mods are a little more complex, and they come with pre-filled disposable or refillable pods. Some have pods with replaceable coils. Also, most have adjustable wattage settings.
After pod mods, there are regulated box mods and tube mods.
The main difference between box and tube mods is their shape. One is shaped like a box, while the other is like a tube. Tube mods are more comfortable to hold and carry. Regulated mods have a screen and a chip allowing for adjustable wattage and various settings. Also, they come with a tank that uses coils inserted into the bottom.
Unregulated box and tube mods have no adjustable settings, and the power goes straight to the coils from the battery. As a result, they are more challenging to use than regulated mods, but they produce higher vapor levels.
There are mods out there for everyone, so new vapers should not worry too much about not being able to find a suitable kit.
How to Use Vape Mods
Each vape mod is different, as they all have different operating instructions.
Disposables are the easiest to use because they are activated by inhaling. But pod, box, and tube mods are more complex.
Types of Vape Mods
Now we will take a look at some of the other best vape mods out there. Our top four were determined based on quality, durability, diversity, value, and just how amazing the vape. Any of our top four truly bring a superior and reliable vapor experience. As we move forward, we will be looking at more specialized box mod vape devices.
By that, we mean the type of performance and vaping that they accommodate. For example, if you are a serious cloud chaser using ultra-low resistance coils, then you may want a very powerful mod that can be vaped at well over 200 watts.
If you like temperature control vaping, you will want the best temperature control box mod. Whatever your individual vaping style, we want to help you find the best box mods to match. Some of the mod styles include:
Single 18650 mods (up to 80 watts)
Dual 18650 mods (up to 220 watts)
Triple 18650 mods (250 to 300 watts)
Quad mods (work with four 18650 vape batteries, can hit 350 watts)
DNA mods To kick things off, let’s have a look at the top-ranked portable vape mods.
These are the single 18650 box mods as well as devices with internal batteries that are more compact in size.
Most Vape mods starter kits are dual batteries and operate with two 18650 vape batteries. They are a size up and heavier than single 18650 box mods. The typical wattage range of a dual 18650 vape mods tops out at about 220 watts. This is perhaps the most common type of vape mods. The best dual 18650 box mods have excellent chipsets for accuracy and responsive vaping. This class of mods can accommodate a variety of vaping styles. You should be aware that for a mod to achieve 200 watts or more, most will need at least 30 amp batteries.
If you vape at 75 to 100 watts, a dual 18650 will have the cell capacity to vape all day long and then some. If you vape at wattages in the 150 to the 200-watt range, you will want to carry an extra set of fully charged batteries with you.
Not many people vape regularly at 150 to 200 watts. It is more common to vape at 75 to 100 watts and then occasionally crank up your mod to put on a cloud show. In other words, you may not use 200 watts very often, but it’s nice to know that you can dial it up if you want to.
Being an electrician is not necessary to vape, but if all these electrical terms get confusing, so it’s better to know the difference between amps, watts, and volts.
High-watt vapes and tanks offer vapers the most advanced form of vaping. These high-powered units can create massive clouds for the cloud-chucking crowd, while also delivering a precision vaping experience.
They are typically dual 18650 vapes or even triple 18650 units. High-performing mods use the latest in vaping technology to both refine the vape, and keep vapers safe with several safety protections. They feature the highest-quality build materials like zinc alloy or stainless steel.
Squonk mods are box mods that use an internal reservoir of e-liquid instead of an external tank. Users squeeze the plastic bottle to send e-juice through a 510 connection to a “bottom-fed” atomizer.
Squonk mods work best with rebuildable tanks. They cut out the need to drip or refill tanks the traditional way. Squonk mods are convenient and easy to use. They allow users to take advantage of increased e-juice capacity because of the bottle inside the mod. Squonk mods are not new.
Custom-made squonk mods first appeared in 2010. They were popular among hardcore vaping enthusiasts for a while. Vape companies started coming out with their versions in 2015. Now, squonk mods are among the most popular versions of box mods.
DNA vape mods are highly regarded for amazing accuracy, performance, and battery efficiency. The DNA is the chipset made by Evolv. Many in the industry consider the DNA board to be the best in the business.
The accuracy of a DNA chip refers to how much power is delivered to the atomizer. If you set a DNA mod to 60 watts, 60 watts is what you get every time. A very smooth and steady 60 watts. Some mods fluctuate, DNA mods do not. This is meaningful to your vaping and your wallet. A DNA mod can help you get the maximum coil life possible.
DNA mods are sought after for their laser precision temperature control vaping as well as exceptional vaping performance. The best DNA box mod is the Vapecige VTBox DNA250C.
Small Vape Mods
Small vape mods are, well, compact vape mod! The better question would be why would you want a portable box mod? What are the advantages? The biggest advantage is portability and convenience. Many vapers have a big quad 18650 mod they use at home and on weekends, and a tiny box mod vape that they use during the week for day-to-day use.
If you want a portable, easy-to-use device, there are plenty to choose from. A small vape mods or box mod can still have all of the features and functions or their larger counterparts. The only drawback would be that, inevitably, there will be less cell capacity.
We have two recommendations when using a compact vape mod:
If you are looking for a compact box mod for all-day vaping, use an atomizer resistance of at least 0.5 ohms and vape at no more than 40 watts. This way you should have enough battery life to get you through an average workday. Portable mods with internal batteries would be suitable as well.
If you are looking for tiny vape mods and want to vape lower resistance atomizers at higher wattage settings, look for a single 18650 device and carry an extra fully charged battery with you. The extra battery is your assurance that you will have enough battery juice to get through the day.
Here are some of the best small vape mods. Some are single 18650 and some have built-in batteries:
What are the advantages of a box mod vape? The simple answer is power and control. The best box mods and vape mods are designed to put power and control in your hands so you can dial in your ideal vaping experience. Of course, mods are larger than typical e-cigarettes and can be more complex to use, but you are trading up for performance. The vaping satisfaction and vapor production are the end goal.
High-performance
More power
Precision control
Customize your personal vaping experience
Another box mod vape advantage is the enormous range of choices available to you. The competition for the best box mod is intense. You know who wins that competition? You and me, that’s who. We do. The consumers. The vaping industry is a place where the free markets work because no one has a monopoly.
Mods With Built-In Battery Vs. Separate Battery
Box mods can come with either a built-in battery or operate using separate batteries.
Built-In Battery Pros and Cons:
Pros:
Convenience
No need to buy separate battery or charger
Solid construction, no removable battery door
Cons:
Device is lost when battery wears out (1 yr average)
When battery dies, you have to stop vaping and recharged
Separate Vape Batteries
Pros:
Extend life of device
Can swap batteries when low
Large choice of batteries
Cons:
Separate expense
Requires purchase of separate battery charger
How Do You Charge a Vape Mod Battery?
To charge a built-in, internal box mod cell, simply connect the mod to a USB port. Depending on the battery capacity, it will take two to three hours to charge fully.
Charging your separate 18650 vape batteries is a different matter.
The vast majority of the best box mods all have a port that you can connect the device to a USB for charging.
We do not recommend charging your vape batteries inside your mod. It is better to use an external battery charger.
A separate vape battery charger will charge your batteries faster, balanced, and more efficiently.
Vape Mod With Firmware Upgrades
We consider vape mod with firmware upgrades a pro. A firmware upgrade is when you connect to the manufacturer’s website, connect your mod to your computer via the USB port, and download the latest operating software into your vapor mod device. Two examples of a firmware upgrade may be expanding the power output of a device or adding another function such as TCR temperature control.
Firmware upgrades allow you to implement the latest vaping technology into your existing box mod. That way you get the new technology but do not have to buy a whole new device.
While mods with upgradeable firmware are a nice bonus, it is not necessarily a reason to buy. Look at it as a plus. If you are someone who likes to experiment with different styles of vaping and love the gadgetry of vape mod, then this would probably be a bigger deal to you. At the end of the day, upgradeable firmware is an example of another technology available to you as a vaper.
Mods With Custom Firing Profile (Power Curve)
Some of the best box mods will offer a custom firing profile. In some mods, this feature is also called a power curve. This means that you will have the ability to program up to ten seconds of atomizer firing. Here’s how that works and why you might like it.
There are usually two different ways to create a custom firing profile. One way is to connect your mod to a computer or your cell phone, sometimes by wi-fi. The other way is to program the profile on the device itself. Both methods work.
A custom fire profile allows you to program the wattage output for each second that you are pressing the fire button.
As an example, you might program the first second to fire at 85 watts
the second to fire at 60 watts
the third second to fire at 50 watts
and then 40 watts for the remaining six seconds.
That way you get an initial hard hit that mellows after the first couple of seconds.
Conversely, you can program a custom fire profile with a very mellow initial hit and gradually ratchet up the vapor intensity. If you like a consistent power output with no variation, then you probably would not have much use for the custom fire profile and would be better suited to normal variable wattage mode.
Most vapers fire the atomizer for about four seconds when vaping. You might not actually use all of the ten seconds of a custom atomizer fire but the option is there.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Most Durable Vape Mods?
The most durable vape mods are those that are IP67 or IP69 rated. This means they are shock, dust, and water-resistant.
The GeekVape Aegis Max and the Smok Mini Scar have that rating.
The Aegis Max has a comfortable leather grip, plus a layer of leather partially protects its battery section. The leather and rubber protect it from falls. Additionally, the battery door is built, so that leather and dust stay out.
The Mini Scar has a similar build. A layer of rubber is all around the battery, and the grip is very comfortable. But one difference is that a screw cap protects the battery compartment. This cap also does an excellent job of keeping out water and dust.
What Is the Most Popular Vape Device?
There is a solid case to be made for the GeekVape Aegis Max.
It has the IP67 rating mentioned above by incorporating a solid zinc alloy body and a rubberized coating. Plus, it uses single 21700 or 18650 batteries, generates 100 watts, and has temperature control.
How Long Do Vape Mods Last?
Disposables only last a couple of weeks, sometimes less. The same goes for many refillable and pre-filled pods.
A box mod with an integrated battery can last longer, but eventually, the battery starts to degrade. Unless the battery can be replaced, the entire device will be useless.
The advantage of vapes that use 18650/20700/21700 batteries is that these are replaceable. So the vape can be used as long as the batteries are available or unless it breaks.
What Are the Best Batteries for Vape Mods?
Some people prefer vapes with onboard batteries because they are likely to replace their vape in a year anyway, so why should they worry about it degrading?
Others may want to hold onto their devices for a long time, so they opt for 18650/20700/21700s. Also, these batteries last longer on higher wattages, especially on dual battery vapes.
Are Box Mods Better Than Vape Pens?
No, because it all depends on what the customer wants. Disposable vape pens are easy to use, making them better for beginner vapers.
Box and tube mods are better suited for vapers who have been doing this for a while and want more than just a nicotine fix. Mods have a range of different settings that make them more fun to vape. Disposables do not have those settings.
Can Vape Mods Explode?
Yes, vapes can explode, but this does not happen often. When this happens, it is usually because the vaper misused the device and ignored the warning lights.
To avoid this happening, read the manual thoroughly and do not do anything with the device not recommended in the manual.
Wrapping Up Our Box Mods Guide
The vape mods are devices that look like a box! Some box mods are extremely elegant. “Regulated” means there are several customizable settings, that allow you to adjust wattage, voltage, and temperature to find your perfect vaping experience. Most vape mods on this list work with 18650 batteries.
Choosing the best box mods can be very confusing. There is a huge variety and they all generally look the same. It’s what is inside that counts. There are too many low-quality units using poor quality materials and flawed firmware. This is why we have put together a list of the best vape mods in different categories. Regardless of your vaping experience or needs, you’ll find something that fits the bill.

I just want to point out a mistake in your review in the very first entry….
you list it as the VooPoo Drag 2 then go on to to discribe the Drag 3 which is correct in the way that it is the newest but your title and image is wrong and isn’t what you are reviewing
This is the most interesting and concise vape review I’ve read. I stopped smoking after buying a cheap Kangertech, which is a perfectly good vape, but integrated battery. I wanted to upgrade and this blog helped me understand the vape world. I ended up buying a Geek Vape Aegis Solo 100w. Real pleased with it and thank you for making this a lot easier!
Hi, newbie looking for my first vape.. Is the Mig Vapor WTF SUB 40 Mini Vape Mod convection heating style? Also, what other vapes do you know of that take oil, wax, dry herb, and eliquid? I’ve been looking around this site and have yet to see others. thanks
Hi, I currently am using Vuse Alto and want to buy a more affordable and larger vaporizer or mod, an ejuice nicotine large volume tank, and large nicotine bottle with high nicotine amount.
Could you offer several choices for each so I can get my cost per kg of nicotine down substantially with value?
Is the Smok morph 219 really water resistant? if so ipx-7,6, or 5? no where on packaging or manual does it mention water proof or even splash proof, or resistance to dust or drops?
Great review! I saw you had the gclass listed as the top mood for dual battery and yes I have one they are awesome but I didn’t see the single mod sl class listed that goes up to 100 watts and can use 18650, 20700, and 21700 watt batteries. I’m currently using the carbon fiber one. Would love to see your review on it. My only con would be that it eats batteries for breakfast doesn’t matter what size you put in there and some of the 21700 don’t want to go in but the Samsungs fit perfect.
4 years behind the counter of a vape shop must have me in a different league. I didn’t see dotmod at all, not even Voopoo Drag or and geekvape aegis legend or any Vandy stuff. If you just haven experienced it you need to. It’s impossible to make a list of the best mods without having the dotmod (widely regarded as the best hands down) and the Voopoo Drag (fastest ramp up time of any .025 seconds)
I am fairly new to vaping, and my lack of knowledge has made it difficult for me to choose devices, so up until now it’s simply been trial and error, I have tried researching online and it is also been a challenge finding a website that is informative as well as easy to navigate through, a lot of websites are written in such a way that u almost need a degree in vaping and it’s lingo to get anything at all helpful from the sites, this site is completely the opposite i could read everything with ease and not only could I read it, I could understand it, so to the website creators, well done u have achieved a bloody good website
Woah, great stuff! Thanks so much for getting this all together in one place for new and experienced vapers alike! The only things I see missing are squonk mods. Maybe for the next one 😉
I bought a smok mag and spent $85 on it. I had it for a month and I never dropped it but when I went to change me coil and juice I took the tank off and the little piece that connects the tank to the mod just fell out. I WILL NEVER BUY A SMOK AGAIN
In best overall box mod you have 3 Smok mods and 2 Halo. I’ve been vaping for 5+ years and I’ve never even heard of Halo and I’ve had enough Smok mods (2) to know their mission is to pump out as many garbage mods they can to maximize profits. I’m sorry but having a list like this destroys all your credibility. I hope this comment gets posted and stays up because new vapers need to know to avoid the mods on your best of list. Want a good mod? Buy a Smoant, Voopoo, Vaporesso, or Tesla. Smoant has not put out a bad mod in the last two years at least, before that I didn’t know about them so…. any of the brands listed make good mods. Hopefully you were able to read this to save yourself money. Smok makes decent tanks but their mods are hit or miss with tons of misses and customer service is a joke. Good luck to all you future vapers on quitting the cigs. On a side note, don’t buy super expensive stuff because the industry moves so fast, a year on and your gear is obsolete sometimes.
I have owned several Smok mods, they look nice and have many features, but after little time they turn out to be trash. However the best Smok mod I have ever owned is the the g-priv 2.
I purchased Smok procolour and have had only 2mths. Problem…….leaking into battery compartment. Wonder if the person in USA who died from exploding batteries while vaping might of had the same issue. Either way it is faulty as you should never have this kind of issue. Smoke engineers need to do much, much better. Also battery compartment opening latch very flimsy plus flip opening to refill ejuice. Retailer says I have to pay to send it back…ummm!! Its very expensive to set up and maintain all involved in vaping …so research very carefully, people. Having said all that I instantly never smoked another cigarette which is excellent…..but have all the issues of buying ALL the myrid of stuff you need to maintain vaping.
Whats up very nice blog!! Man .. Beautiful .. Wonderful .. I’ll bookmark your website and take the feeds also…I am satisfied to find a lot of helpful information right here within the submit, we’d like work out extra strategies on this regard, thanks for sharing. . . . . .
I bought a GeekVape Aegis 100 Watt in October of 2017. It got knocked off of my kitchen table once and the screws that hold the silver plate where the connection to the tank is stripped and it hasn’t functioned properly since. That was about 2 weeks after I bought it. It was sold to me by Jayde’s Vapor Lounge in Muscatine, Iowa as being very durable. It wasn’t. The Uwell Crown 3 tank I bought was not damaged, but the “durable” GeekVape Aegis 100 Watt mod couldn’t even take a 3 foot drop on to linoleum. I bought it because I thought it would be durable enough to use at the mill I work in, but my eleaf iStick 100 mod has lasted about 3 years with no trouble and has been dropped on concrete from multiple heights and is still working fine. Maybe I just got a defective one, but Jayde’s Vapor Lounge wouldn’t swap it out or help me locate new screws. For as much money as I spend on that thing I can’t express enough how irritated I was and continue to be by that purchase. My cousin has the exact same mod and his has taken a lot of abuse and is still fine. I want a durable mod but I think this one isn’t as durable as it is being portrayed.
That’s totally unlucky for you dude. I got my second aegis for almost 6 months now. My first one got knocked off from a second floor veranda hitting a solid concrete floor. Broke the side plates and the atomizer but the mod worked like brand new. If only it wasn’t stolen i would still be using the thing.
It may be too late now but call geekvape. Your local B&M not replacing it is total B.S. I would never spent another dime there and let them know why. I’ve seen the Aegis stand up too incredible abuse but maybe your hit just right. 1 in a million type thing. But it sounds like yours was defective. Geekvape will make it right I bet. Good luck to you
I have the new aegis legend although it’s not the 100 but it’s pretty much the same thing as yours but bigger. But I’ve dropped it many times and the only thing that broke was the glass of the tank. It’s taken some incredible abuse. And my wife has the same one as you and it’s had more than it’s share of drops the most recent was when she left it on the hood of her Denali suv and it fell off the hood as she pulled out of the garage and was fine given some scratches. I think yours might be defective as you suggested. I would contact the company and regarding your vape store.. Never do business with them ever again except leave a bad review with a explanation.
Can I get a little help here? I use nothing but 510 cartridges with some thin oils but mostly thick. A buddy showed me his davinci 3 with temperature control over the course of one hit. The idea is to maximize the entourage effect. Can anyone point me to a comparable box of mini box mod out there? Thanks
Andrew
August 9, 2021 at 10:31 pmI just want to point out a mistake in your review in the very first entry….
you list it as the VooPoo Drag 2 then go on to to discribe the Drag 3 which is correct in the way that it is the newest but your title and image is wrong and isn’t what you are reviewing

May 21, 2020 at 12:42 pmThis is the most interesting and concise vape review I’ve read.
