Reasons to Get This Device
You want a discreet, portable concentrates device
You want a concentrates device that has draw-activation
Vape pens have a very straightforward design and are not that complicated. Some even have no buttons or controls and function through air activation, meaning a user has to inhale from the mouthpiece to produce vapor. Vape pens consist of three main components:
A material chamber (tank or atomizer)
These are central components of any vape pen, regardless of the material it vapes (e-liquid, dry herb, or concentrates). There are slight variations between the devices used for cannabis products and e-liquid, but they all still use a battery and heating element to generate vapor.
Many vape pens are disposable, meaning that they do not need to be recharged and are intended to be thrown away after the battery or liquid runs out. However, some devices are rechargeable and refillable and can be recharged using a USB port or charger that most devices come with.
What's The Difference Between a Vape and a Vape Pen?
A “vape” is a general term for all kinds of vaporizers regardless of the material that is being vaped (e-juice, dry herb, concentrates, etc.). A “vape” can be several different devices, from a disposable to a mechanical mod that uses the unrestrained power of the battery. For example, a vape pen is a vape, but it is a specific device with a pen-like shape.
Vape pens are generally for beginners as they are straightforward and do not have many moving electronics parts. Often, they are 510-threaded batteries that attach to an atomizer or tank that is also 510-threaded that produces vapor either with a firing button or is draw-activated and does not require any buttons or controls.
Types of Vape Pens
The various vape pens span three different materials that the cells can vape. These materials are e-liquids, dry herbs, and solid or liquid cannabis concentrates. There are a few distinctions between the three types of vape pens, but they are not so different from each other. They all require the same essential components, such as:
A tank or atomizer for the material
E-liquid vape pens often have a distinct heating element or coil that works only with e-liquids. A coil can also be used with solid or liquid concentrates in a dab or wax pen. Still, it has a different design, typically with either a rod and wire combination or a flat-disc heating element made of quartz or ceramic.
Dry herb vape pens also use a unique heating element, which is more oven-like, as it consists mainly of an open chamber coated with quartz or ceramic and heated up from the outside. Dry herb vaporizers also have different heating styles distinct from e-liquid or concentrate pens.
A dry herb vaporizer either uses convection or conduction to create vapor. Conduction applies direct heat to the dry herb, while convection blows hot air through the material to activate the components inside like THC or CBD. Some dry herb vaporizers even employ both methods to heat material.
How to Choose a Vape Pen?
Choosing a vape pen can be done based on the material used. An e-liquid pen has different specifications than a dry herb or concentrates pen, making them unique among vapes. Also, a lot depends on the user’s experience level and if they have any experience with vaping or vape pens.
Many so-called starter kits are geared towards beginners and people who have never vaped. These kits come with everything you need to begin vaping, except the e-juice, which is another thing that users need to look for but is another topic entirely. Disposable vape pens do not require any experience or knowledge to use and function the same way as many other vape pens.
Another factor to consider is whether the device has a solid build quality and uses high-quality materials like stainless steel, zinc, aluminum, or glass. It is important that any vape does not have any synthetic materials like plastic or glue that could be heated and then inhaled by the user but also so it can last a long time and does not break easily.
Tips for Choosing the Best Vape Pen
There is a tradeoff between size and cell life. If you want a more portable pen, you’ll have to compromise the battery. On the other hand, if you want to enjoy extended vaping sessions without recharging frequently, you’ll have to settle for bigger, less portable vape pens.
Look For Vape Pens With Internal, Built-In Batteries
Most of the latest and best vape pens are charged with micro-USB, but some may have external batteries. The best quality devices use high-quality built-in batteries. Low-quality vaporizers use lower grade lithium with more impurities and cause bad vaping and even safety concerns. The best vape pens on our list all have the best quality internal battery systems that can be quickly and easily recharged.
Many vapers, especially beginners, don’t pay attention to one important thing is the airflow. The amount of airflow has a significant impact on the overall vaping experience of any pen. For a mouth-to-lung pen, you’ll want a pen with a tight draw; and for more vapor but slightly less flavor, a pen with a lot of airflows is better.
The airflow in a vape pen also helps evenly distribute heating in the chamber. Therefore, one of the criteria we considered in determining the best vape pens is airflow.
Heating Chamber Size
If you enjoy extended vaping sessions, make sure that the pen has a large cartridge and chamber so you don’t run out of material too quickly. Vape pens do not have heating chambers as large as portable vaporizers or desktop vaporizers. What you are getting with a vape pen is compact size. The vape pens on our list have large heating chambers for multiple, fulfilling sessions.
Best Vape Pen Values
The most important factor, but also most difficult to figure out, is whether or not the pen is worth the price. Read the reviews to ensure that any vape pen is worth the investment you’re putting in. You want to make sure that it will have the effect you want and last for a long time. Look for companies that stand behind their product with a warranty.
When investing in a vape pen, you need to remember not to be afraid to spend a bit more for quality. A quality vape pen will pay for itself in getting more mileage out of your materials.
What to Look For in a Good Vape Pen?
Like any other product, you need to consider and compare a few of the top vape pens measuring quality, durability, ease of use, and value for money. Vape pens are a unique product, and you should keep some guidelines in mind when buying one:
Unfortunately, vape pens are very easy to clone. For new vapers, it’s tough to distinguish a copy from a genuine pen. A clone might cost as much as a real product but perform poorly. Clones can even be dangerous. A little common sense, however, can save you the hassle. You can buy from reputable retailers and avoid fishy retailers who offer fake vape pens to ensure you’re getting a legit vape pen.
Another thing you can do to avoid clones is to buy a vape pen directly from an American vape brand like V2 or Mig Vapor. You will be buying directly from the company that makes your pen. On top of that, you will have warranty protection and US-based customer service.
We discussed the three different types of vape pens in the previous section. It goes without saying that when shopping for a vape pen, you need to buy one that supports the type of material you prefer. If you want to get a multipurpose vaporizer pen, make sure it best performs with the material that you most often vape. Doing a little research and reading vapor pen reviews will give you a good idea of the pen’s compatibility.
If you get an authentic vapor pen, rest assured that you will get decent performance. But some vaporizer pens are very low-priced, and you get what you pay for. Inexpensive vape pens take too long to heat up, are fragile, and can even burn the material. When using a crap vapor pen, you get a burnt taste. We recommend investing in a decent vaporizer made by a reputable manufacturer. The best vaporizer pens will give you great flavor and nice throat hits.
Some of the vaporizer pens can allow you to vape multiple materials, which we have already discussed.
Multiple functions are always a bonus.
Two major vape pens depend on how they function: conduction style and convection style. The performance of the pen greatly depends on its type. In conduction vape pens, the material directly contacts the heating chamber. This can sometimes result in a burnt taste when the heating element gets too hot or when there is very little material in the chamber.
On the flip, the convection vape pens blow extremely hot air through the material, turning it into vapor. A mesh screen, usually made of glass or metal, is used to contain the vaping material. The convection-style vape pens usually offer better flavor and taste. However, they can be more expensive and take longer to heat up.
Vape pens come in all shapes, designs, and colors, from simple pens to extremely stylish ones like the Series 3X. While appearance doesn’t have anything to do with the pen’s performance, some obnoxious-looking pens might outperform their much better-looking counterparts. However, some people want to own only elegant gadgets, even vape pens.
You will find some outsized pens, but usually, the smaller ones look better, are more elegant, and concealable. Of course, appearance usually is a matter of personal preference, and it’s up to you what you want. But at least don’t buy a pen that you will feel embarrassed to vape in front of your friends! Likewise, buying a pen that looks extremely stylish but performs poorly is nothing but a waste of your hard-earned money.
Battery life is a major factor in choosing any electronic device these days. Since you’ll use the vape pen as a portable device, you don’t want the battery to die when you need a vape. Vape pens that support bigger batteries are also bigger, so there’s a tradeoff.
Vape pens that can be charged via USB are better than those requiring a unique adapter. Some vape pens also have a car charger and a convenient wall adapter.
Vape pen heating chambers are usually steel or ceramic. This is because the heating comes from metal coils. Ideally, you do not want metal vape coils coming into direct contact with dry herb material.
Ceramic coils are known to deliver a pure flavor, although you may have to compromise somewhat on vapor quantity. The best ceramic heating chambers, such as those Mig Vapor uses, feature heating coils built into the ceramic material, ensuring that there are no exposed metal coils.
The top-notch manufacturers back their products with exceptionally long warranties. A long warranty is one of the biggest indicators of high quality.
Warranty and quality are a big part of why companies like V2 and Mig Vapor are prominently on the best vape pens list. Some imported products don’t have warranty protection and may be counterfeit products. When you buy directly from an American company, you know you will get authentic quality.
The Cost of Vape Pens
Many devices vary in price, but they are generally not so expensive. For example, there are a variety of pens that cost less than $10, but they are disposable and are not meant to be reused or recharged. If users want to buy something reusable and last for a long time, they should expect to pay upwards of $50 or more for a decent kind of vape. Dry herb and concentrates vaporizers tend to cost a little more than e-liquid devices because they use higher-quality materials (ceramic, quartz, stainless steel) and have higher-powered, internal batteries.
What are the best vape pens on the market?
There is no right or wrong answer to what is the best vape pen on the market. The “best” is a subjective term, and what might be the “best” for one person may not be the best for someone else. There is also the question of what kind of material is being vaped and what specifications or design it has that make it the best for someone else.
But, objectively, the best vape pen should be one that is:
Made from high-quality materials
Performs well under different conditions
Lasts a long time
What are the best vape pens for CBD?
Devices for CBD or cannabidiol are varied depending on the way users choose to ingest the oil. There are various choices, from using pre-filled 510-cartridges to using CBD-dominant dry herb or CBD concentrate in a wax pen. Depending on these formats, several devices can be used. The most convenient and accessible to use are pre-filled, disposable vape pens that are ready to use and do not require any maintenance.
Can vape pens hurt you?
Vape pens are not harmful, but they are battery-powered devices that can be harmful if improperly used. Users should never try to fix or repair a broken device by themselves and should always take care of them as they would with any other battery-powered device. Likewise, inhaling vapor is not inherently harmful, but it could be with heavy, long-term use.
Are vape pens legal in India?
Vape pens exist in a gray area in India as they are technically illegal to sell, buy and use. However, they are still in use around the country and remain unregulated generally.
Does Amazon sell vape pens?
Yes, Amazon does sell vape pens, but they do not have the variety and selection of specialty online vape retailers. Instead, users can find universal vape batteries like 510s and accessories like coils and some atomizers. Still, users would be better off finding specialized gear at one of the many online vape retailers.
What vape pens fit all cartridges?
The most universally used vape cartridges are 510-threaded, which means they are compatible with any tank or atomizer that is also 510-threaded. Some cartridges use 810-threading, but they are rare and not as widely used as 510-threads.
Are most vape pens 510 thread?
While 510-threading remains the most popular threading for vape tanks and batteries, some devices do not use it, even though they are exceedingly rare. The other type of threading that is sometimes used is 810-threading, but those have since been replaced with 510s.
Can you fly with a vape pen?
Some vape pens are allowed on board with you in your pockets or carry-on luggage. However, larger devices with heavy-duty batteries are not permitted into the cargo holds of airplanes for safety reasons, so they should never be packed with checked baggage. In addition, flying with vapes varies from country to country, so make sure you know and understand the rules before flying with a vape.
How To Use A Vape Pen For the First Time?
Many beginners struggle with getting their vape pens operational for the first time. The important thing to remember is that these devices are designed to be easy to use – no more than five minutes should pass from the moment a pen is unpacked until it’s already creating thick vapor. So if you’re having problems getting your pen started, follow these guidelines.
How to use a vape pen:
Connect the battery to the charger until it’s fully charged.
Then, add the material to the pen.
Connect the battery to the tank or insert the chamber into the device – screw everything on tightly.
Screw on the mouthpiece.
Turn the pen on – click the fire button three or five times quickly.
Press and hold the fire button while inhaling (don’t hold it for more than 10 seconds).
Release the fire button.
How to use a vape pen varies by device, of course. For example, finely ground material vapes better when using a dry herb vapor pen. Also, the heating chamber should be fully packed but not too tight. This is a general guideline. It would be a good idea to read the instruction manual that comes with your device, so there are no surprises.
How To Fill a Vape Pen?
Many beginners get confused when they try to fill their vape pens for the first time. That’s understandable because the question isn’t really HOW to put juice in a vape pen – it’s WHAT pen you are using. Several manufacturers have switched to a top-fill system in recent years. This means their tanks have a tiny hole at the top that can be opened and e-liquid poured. Others still use the bottom-fill system – the whole tank needs to be unscrewed, tipped over, and then filled. Best concentrate vape pens are filled in much the same way. However, the procedure is a bit different for dry herb pens. First, the mouthpiece needed to be unscrewed, and the chamber was taken out. Then, after grinding your loose leaf, fill the chamber gently (don’t overfill) and re-assemble the pen.
Why does my vape pen taste burnt?
If the vapor produced by a vape pen tastes burnt, the most likely problem is the temperature setting. If the temperature is too high, it will burn the vaping material (and cotton, in the case of an e-juice vape pen), producing a foul-tasting flavor. Lower the temperature on your vape pen and test it again. If the problem persists, check the heating chamber. In the case of concentrate and dry herb vape pens, a simple cleaning of the heating chamber might do the trick (as it removes the old, caked-in material). As for e-juice vape pens, the problem might be in the vape juice used – try low VG juices (they are less dense than high VG juices). If the problem doesn’t go away, remember that this sometimes happens, even with the best vape pen. To completely get rid of the burnt taste, it’s advisable to change the atomizer completely.
How To Clean a Vape Pen?
The procedure for cleaning a vape pen will differ depending on the type. For batteries, it’s often more than enough to wipe them down with a clean cloth occasionally, making sure that the connection is free of dirt, caked-in vaping material, or vape juice. Dry herb pens need to be taken apart every couple of uses, and the chamber cleaned with a brush. E-juice and concentrate vape pens require the same treatment, but the process differs slightly since we talk about liquids. First, take the tank apart but place the atomizer (the bit with the coil and the cotton) to the side – you don’t want to get that wet. Next, take the other parts (mouthpiece, tank glass, the base, airflow control ring) and place them in a bowl. Fill the bowl with warm water and rubbing alcohol, and let the parts soak for a couple of hours. Afterward, clean them with a Q-tip, soak up the excess water with a paper towel, and let them sit until they are completely dry.
Is a vape pen bad for you – vape pen health issues?
There’s no sense in insisting on the fact that vaping is healthy – inhaling anything other than pure air into the lungs isn’t. However, research (Cochrane Review) has shown that vaping doesn’t seem to have any negative short-term health consequences. Further studies on how vaping affects our overall health are underway (and are still much needed), but, for now, scientists mostly agree that vaping is not as dangerous as smoking. For example, public Health England has concluded that ‘vaping is unlikely to exceed 5% of the harm from smoking tobacco’. The biggest vape pen danger is that these devices are battery-operated. Every battery-operated device needs to be handled carefully (even smartphones, laptops, and tablets) because there’s a (small) risk that the cell will malfunction and explode. So treat your pen-style vapes with care and respect (making sure that they don’t get wet or similar), and everything should be ok.
Vape pens are a safe and convenient way to enjoy many different materials, from nicotine e-liquid to cannabis products. They are easy to use and have very little to them to learn. Users can often pick up a disposable vape and start using it right away, or they can try their hand at something more advanced and try a device with variable settings and a control panel.

I was a smoker for over 25 years. In this time I also earned my medical degree with a specialization in addiction treatment and counseling. That period has led me to vaping, my interest started around 2011. I’m fighting the tide of hysteria and dis-information around vaping that emanates from various fronts legislative, cultural and scientific. Having scientific councils support, I’m happy to contribute my thoughts, articles, and expertise.
