What is in JUUL — Know What’s Really Inside the Juul Pod

JUUL Vape build quality

Juul is one of the biggest names in vaping due to the convenience and quality of the company’s pod vape system. With a Juul, vaping is as simple as dropping your favorite pod into place and taking a pull. It doesn’t offer multiple voltage settings, but it offers consistent high-quality performance.

Every pod contains about 59mg of nicotine per milliliter, but the Juul produces rather smooth vapor thanks to its use of nicotine salts. To comparison regular 18 mg/mL nicotine strength e-liquid measures 35%.

Juul actually uses their own proprietary nicotine salt blend. The exact recipe isn’t known, but there is a public list of Juul ingredients.

Table Of Contents:

What are the Juul Ingredients?

The list of Juul ingredients is just like the list of ingredients for any other nicotine salt vape juice. While Juul uses their own, specific blend of these five ingredients, they still use the same five ingredients found in every nicotine salt. There are five Juul juice ingredients.

  • Glycerol — a liquid extracted from plant oils. It’s a sweet oil that results in thick, viscous vapor.
  • Propylene Glycol — an organic, non-toxic compound. This compound results in thin yet flavorful vapor with a strong throat hit.
  • Nicotine — potent parasympathomimetic alkaloid naturally derived from the tobacco plants. Is both a sedative and a stimulant. Highly addictive.
  • Benzoic acid — allows vape juice to vaporize at lower temperatures, resulting in a smoother hit.
    Food-grade flavoring

Juul uses a 30/60 PG/VG ratio in their pods. Propylene Glycol produces thin yet flavorful vapor, while Vegetable Glyсerin produces a thicker, sweeter vapor. Juul’s PG-dominant blend results in thin, semi-sweet vapor that’s loaded with flavor.

Nicotine is an organically and synthetically occurring stimulant. While some vape juices don’t have nicotine, Juul doesn’t currently make nicotine-free pods. Nicotine is one of the five main Juul ingredients. Juul pods are estimated to contain 59mg of nicotine per milliliter.

Benzoic acid is a primary Juul ingredient, and it’s a common ingredient found in nicotine salts. In fact, benzoic acid is what separates nicotine salts from other vape juices. Benzoic acid allows nicotine salts to pack a ton of nicotine without creating vapor that’s too harsh-feeling.

Juul Ingredients FDA

Juul and other vape companies now fall under the authority of the FDA. Consequently, they have to follow the FDA’s rules. This is generally considered to be a good thing, as the FDA regulations require vape juice brands to disclose a full ingredient list.

The Juul ingredient list is available to the public on account of this regulation. A host of other regulations apply to Juul and other vape companies, including mandatory package warnings and identity verification.

Are Juul Ingredients Safe?

While Juul ingredients and other e-liquid ingredients are selected with safety in mind, they can’t truly be called “safe.” A report from Public Health England claimed that vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking. If that report is to be trusted, there’s still that 5%.

This report alludes to the idea that vaping is potentially safer than smoking, but vaping still comes with a certain amount of risk. That being said, Juul ingredients are as safe as those of any other nicotine salt.

Propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin are primary Juul ingredients that are considered to be relatively safe. Nicotine, on the other hand, stirs up a good bit of controversy. Nicotine is a stimulant that occurs naturally in tobacco, but vape juices usually use synthetic nicotine.

Juul Ingredients vs Cigarettes

There are only a handful of Juul ingredients, while cigarettes have a much longer, more complicated ingredient list. Juul ingredients include only glycerin, propylene glycol, nicotine, flavoring, and benzoic acid.

Cigarettes, on the other hand, contain over 7000 chemicals, and 60 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer.

Is Diacetyl a Juul Ingredient?

Most vape companies have started to phase diacetyl out, and thankfully, diacetyl is not a Juul ingredient. Juul sticks to a simple, 5-ingredient recipe that keeps it pretty basic.

Diacetyl is a potentially hazardous ingredient found in some vape juices. It’s intended to give vapor a more buttery consistency, but it has also been found to be extremely harmful to the lungs.

Is Nicotine the Most Harmful Juul Ingredient?

Nicotine is a controversial topic, but it’s one of the primary Juul pod ingredients. It is generally considered to be an addictive substance, which is its primary drawback and the reason for its controversial nature. Juul pods have a rather high concentration of nicotine in every pod.

You could safely say that nicotine is the most harmful ingredient in a Juul pod, considering the other ingredients are considered by the FDA to be relatively safe. Vegetable Glycerin and Propylene Glycol are considered to be safe for human consumption.

Nicotine, on the other hand, is a potentially harmful, addictive chemical. Juices containing nicotine are required by the FDA to come with a warning, while the rest of the Juul ingredients are considered, for the most part, to be relatively harmless.

Why is Juul Believed to be Appealing to Minors?

Vaping Legal purchase age Map
In the U.S. and many other countries, vaping is age-restricted. Most of the time, vaping is only permitted for adults, which usually means over 18. However, with any new set of rules, there are those that will try to break them.
Underage vaping is a real problem, and the Juul name is often brought up with that problem. There’s a simple reason for this.

Juul doesn’t support underage vaping by any means. Juul devices just happen to be extremely compact, so they tend to appeal to stealth-oriented vapers. That includes a lot of underage vapers, but Juul and the FDA have made active efforts to prevent underage vaping.

Conclusion

Juul ingredients are a pretty straightforward recipe. They include ingredients that are common in most vape juices. Nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerin, benzoic acid, and food-grade flavoring are the five simple ingredients in Juul pods.

While there are no nicotine-free Juul pods, these pods are diacetyl-free. Each pod has approximately 59mg of nicotine per milliliter, so the nicotine salt in Juul pods have a relatively high nicotine concentration.

Some love the classic Juul pod recipe while some just don’t get the appeal. Needless to say, Juul doesn’t have any problems in terms of popularity as one of the biggest names in vaping today. Have you owned a Juul, and how do you feel about the experience it offers?

Hello. I used juul sometimes. I used the tobacco flavor one and the menthol flavor one and the mint flavor one. I used 3% and 5%. Usually 3%. Vaping is awesome! It’s safer than smoking.

I smoked cigarettes for 20+ years. Back in the day it was much easier to buy cigarettes well under the age required of 16. I tried all the cessation offered on the market and nothing worked. I switched to vaping using different vape methods but still smoked cigarettes. It wasn’t until I used Juul I was able to give up cigarettes completely in April 2017. Yes Juul is no money saver and yes it is still healthier to not smoke or vape. However, I hated the smell of smoke on clothes, in my car and that is gone. The infamous smokers cough/bronchitis that I had with cigarettes is gone.

Full disclosure, I use Juul. Propylene glycol is a food grade antifreeze, and is used extensively as such. Especially in freezing processes. But, being food grade, is a relatively safe. Don’t confuse this propylene glycol with ethylene glycol, which is radiator fluid. Propylene glycol has been used in smoke machine for quite sometime.

I just want to put out there that I believe the 30 PG/60 VG % statement doesn’t make mathematical sense. I do not know the exact ratio but as someone who has been mixing e-liquid for several years you can only create a 30 PG/70 VG % mix or a 40 PG/60 VG % mix.

Speaking as someone with asthma that has had multiple nasty asthma attacks caused by second hand vape smoke OUTSIDE, this is a noxious, toxic and incredibly inflammatory combination of chemicals and compounds. I have been to the ER because of someone’s lack of consideration for others in public where smoking is prohibited.

Juul has been keeping me off cigs for 4 months with only 2 packs smoked in that time and i was a pack a day smoker. Im in NYS, supply seems to run out at times, the price keeps rising, and difficult to obtain in some areas. I wish they made 1% and 0% pods to wean off completely.

This statement is wrong. “Juul uses a 70/30 PG/VG ratio in their pods.”
Even Juul’s website says it is a 30/70 PG/VG mix.

both of us are wrong. Juul site says ’30/60 mix’ — we’re fixing this

Is it 30/vg, 60/pg or the other way?

Hi, according to our sources 30/pg and 60/vg (propylene glycol 30 and vegetable glycerin 60), so 30/60 PG/VG is still true
          Thanks for asking

I normally smoke a light menthol 120 mm cigarette. Would I do best starting with a 3% menthol pod to be similar to what I’m used to with cigarettes? My goal is to cut back then get off of the cigs. I don’t what to increase my level of nicotine from what I am currently used to. It would be helpful to know what a normal hit from certain cigarettes is from a nicotine level. Ex: Marlboro hit vs Juul hit, etc…

    To: Jon King
The main ingredient to investigate is the Benzoic Acid. In what little research I’ve done, that seems to be the most harmful ingredient in the Juul recipe. Gail

Except for nicotine I believe you failed to mention that these food grade ingredients are for ingestion through the stomach and intestines. I can find NO studies inhaling propylene glycol, glycerin, benzoic acid, and food-grade flavoring through the lungs and their effects on the delicate bronchi and pulmonary vasculature Lungs are for breathing air so I would be very skeptical of an article that failed to mention this.
