The Magic Flight Launch Box aka MFLB has one of the most unique designs for portable weed vaporizers on the market. This American vape is for use with dry herbs, it is pretty effective and the price is very reasonable.
Before we do the in-depth review, let’s take a quick look at its key features:
- Launched: May 2009
- Designed by: Magic-Flight
- Designed and manufactured San Diego, CA
- For use with: Dry Herb
MFLB Vaporizer – Who is it for?
Let’s say that you’re a party animal and love to vape your flowers with a bunch of friends. The Launch Box can be a good choice. The price is competitive at $119, significantly cheaper than most of the portable herb vapes in the same class. Considering the affordable price and unassuming design, it might seem like a waste of time. However, there is more about the controversial vape. Let’s dig deep into the features, benefits, and shortcomings of the Magic Flight Launch Box.
MFLB – Design and Look and Feel
Crafted in the USA, the Magic Flight Launch Box is exquisitely made. It is solidly built out of a single block of wood and it’s built to last a long time. The only weak area is probably the screen, which shouldn’t be tampered with anyway. As long as one uses it correctly and does not abuse it, the Magic Flight Launch Box will serve users for many years.
The design is unique, but not very elegant. It’s not too big and fits easily in hand. Conversely, the square box isn’t very ergonomic, especially when you compare it with other new units. It’s one of the very few vaporizers that are made of wood and looks like anything but a vape. There is a plastic tube for getting draws, which again isn’t a great solution but works just fine. Yes, you’ve got the right idea, it’s not really sturdy.
The herb chamber comes with with a clear plastic screen. This gives you a view of how much remaining herbs is in the chamber. The screen is a nifty feature that I would love to see in other herbal vaporizers too.
It can hold huge amounts of herbs. This means you won’t have to go through the ordeal of refilling the vape too often. On the inside, it’s a little fancier than you might think. It does what you expect from a portable herb.
Unlike most other vaporizers that use 18650 batteries, the MFLB works on two double AA batteries. You can use the rechargeable batteries, but then you’ll have to buy a charger as well. This is an approach we haven’t seen in any other vaporizer. Depending on your vaping style and needs, it can be either a blessing or a curse. In my case, it’s not a blessing at all.
Using MFLB Vaporizer
Before filling up the vaporizer, users should prepare the herbs first by finely grinding them up. The finer the grind, the better your vape will be. This ensures even vaporization and that no residue is left in the tank. It seems like extra work, but if you want to maximize the Launch Box’s potential, this is highly recommended.
Once filled, users engage the battery to start vaporizing. Draws should be long and slow. Users recommend pulls of about five to ten seconds. While the device does not have any screens to show what temperature you are drawing at, its design allows one to control vapor heat, depending on how long the herb is heated and how fast one draws. If the herb seems overheated, the draw is too slow. If there is no vapor whatsoever, the draw is too quick. It takes practice, but it is worth investing time in to perfect it.
The other way to draw is by taking small, quick, draws to allow vapor build up inside the chamber. This is much easier to do, though tastes vary, and users should try both methods to find what works for them.
It is also recommended that the material be mixed between draws or at least every other draw. The back end of the included cleaning brush can be used to gently mix the herb inside. Alternatively, one can hold the lid tight and give the box a firm shake. After shaking, make sure that the herb is all settled in the center of the trench before vaping.
There is no display or any other means for you to know which temperature the unit is at. This can be really annoying when you start using it first. Getting it to work at the right temperature will have a learning curve. But again, just as they say, you get what you pay for.
Ups and Downs of the Flavor
Despite the humble design, the vape offers good flavor, especially for such an affordable price. Just make sure to use the sipping method. In other words, take slow, deep draws, just like you’re drinking hot tea from a cup. And that’s the way the manual recommends you to vape. Also, the vaporizer works better when you grind the herbs really small. It might be a minor hassle but can greatly improve the experience.
There are some weaknesses also. For starters, it’ll burn a few herbs on the sides in direct contact with the heating element. What this means is that towards the end of the session, the flavor will change a little. As a result, you’ll get a burnt taste.
Yet the MFLB is Reliable
Although it might not have the sturdiest of the designs, it’s pretty reliable when it comes to performance. In fact, if you use it properly, the vape can last for several months, if not years. Just don’t drop it and don’t tamper with the screen. Moreover, the American manufacturer has great replacement policies. In case you break something or have any issues, it’s very likely that you’ll get help to fix it.
It produces a constant, decent stream of vapor, provided that you know how to use it. As far as the battery life is concerned, it’s as good as you can expect from the double A batteries. Depending on how frequently you use it, you can get anything from 50 minutes to several hours of vaping. The temperature of operation also plays a factor.
Things we loved about the MFLB
- Very reasonably price for a herbal vaporizer that performs decently well
- Vaporizes all the herbs in the chamber
- Simple to use, easy to clean and shows you how much herb remains
- American manufacturer with great customer service
Things we didn’t like
- Very basic functionality
- Has a steep learning curve in the beginning
- You must grind the herbs very finely
- Can give a little-burnt taste if you vape for extended periods
To be honest, MFLB is very hit or miss and recommending it isn’t easy. It’s a decent choice if you’re looking for a portable vape that’s affordable. As a result, the $119 price tag can be pretty alluring. However, elegant, powerful, and versatile vaporizers that produces thick, flavorful vapor do come with a price. You might be able to find better options. But again, let’s not forget that you’ll be paying a lot more.
