Nothing less than a luxurious box
The Boost Black Edition is a portable rig; it comes with an impressive large carrying case. It will surely protect the kit, even if we believe it is not the most practical. If traveling, for example, you will need enough space to carry the box. However, the box looks great! It is a wooden hexagon-shaped box, with foam inside to keep every single item of the kit well protected.
Not the most discreet device, but…
If compared to a standard vape pen, the Boost is of course relatively large and feels slightly heavy when holding. However, it remains a comfortable size to hold, and as a semi-portable rig, the Boost can be considered as small and compact to our opinion.
The Boost Black Edition is not the type of item we can call a ‘pocket device’ that we can carry in our jeans pocket, take to a party, to a mountain trek or to take at work and use during breaks. However, it is perfect to use at home.
Look, feel and ease of use
We like how the Boost looks. The matte black finish looks simple but elegant at the same time, and it gives that feeling of a solid item. It is a high-quality build device. The size is good for a rig; it would not make sense to have one smaller than that. The Boost is overall straightforward to use. The only tricky part could be remembering to click five times for ceramic or quartz, and three times for titanium.
Dr. Dabber Boost Black Edition – Closer look at the key features
Temperature: it is all about the nails
Not one, not two.. three nails! This is what the Dr. Dabber Boost Black Edition offers. This is the main feature, and it allows each vaping session to get personalized, to suit everyone when it comes to tastes, clouds size, flavor strength, or even session length.
The nails are all domeless, so the large and flat surface means they can accommodate bigger dabs and that they heat up more quickly than domed nails. Some could find the temperature flexibility limited, which we can understand. However, it is widely compensated by the high-quality hits, flavors and the power.
The titanium nail requires pressing the button THREE times to switch on. Then 20-30 seconds after turning it on, the light turns blue from white, indicating that the temperature reached 515 F and was ready for dabbing. During our test, it continued to heat for another 20 seconds, reaching a max temperature of 610 F. If you are looking for durability, bigger clouds and excellent heat retention, than the Titanium nail is for you.
Quartz and ceramic nails
The quartz and ceramic nails require pressing the button FIVE times to switch on. The light turned blue and after a 40 second preheat, the light turned white indicating the device was heated to about 520 F and was ready for dabbing. The heating continued for 20 seconds to reach 600 F. As for our personal experience, the quartz produced full flavored vapors, while with the ceramic one we rather had lengthy dab sessions.
The 2500mAH battery is a long lasting runner. We were getting around 25 heating cycles per charge (2-3h to fully charge it), which was great. Also, the battery got us about 30 uses per charge. Not bad at all! The battery is impressively powerful and can bring the nail up to 600 F multiple times. Each time you heat up the nail, the battery automatically shuts back off after 20-30 seconds, which preserves it.
A great extra to have. A bit of water filtration usually goes a long way to cool down the 600 F dabs, and there is no risk of spilling the bong water again. It is also easy to clean and extremely useful to enhance this fantastic device.
The Vapor: Superb Quality
What a fantastic vapor quality, the flavor taste, and smoothness were such a delight. Moreover, we especially enjoyed using it at lower temperatures, where the vapor came smoothly and extremely flavorful. We also tried the bigger nail which produced very thick clouds of vapor. Dr. Dabber also offers very cool glass attachments that can produce great water filtration, and consequently get tasty and pure vapor tastes.
Simple but time consuming given the size of the device. Cleaning took us some time, and it is necessary to keep a quality vapor for the next sessions.
First, we carefully removed the glass mouthpiece; our advice is to use two hands. Then, we unscrewed the nail and blew in the top to get rid of the remaining water. We did it above the sink.
Next, we filled the mouthpiece with alcohol, covered the holes with our hands and shook, shook, shook. Then we poured in more alcohol through the top, to drain it and repeated it a couple of times before rinsing thoroughly with tap water. We cleaned the device top using alcohol and a Q-Tip ear.
As we said, it takes some time. However, it is strongly advised and worth the effort.
Loading the beast
Here comes our favorite part: testing the device!
To get started, we referred to the user manual supplied in the kit. It was clear and easy to follow. Moreover, since the Dr. Dabber Boost Black Edition is designed for wax concentrates and oils only, not for dry herbs, we decided to test it with a strawberry flavored concentrate.
At first, we separated the glass water filtration piece from the device and filled it with tap water. It was easy enough to unscrew the top of the device, access the heating element where we poured our concentrate. Screwing the ceramic nail into the base was as easy, before sliding the water attachment back over the top.
Fire it up!
Once the device loaded, since we used the ceramic nail for the test, we had to press the power button five times to switch it on. We held the fire button until the nail got hot, and we used the dab tool to load the wax or oil onto the nail, before using the carb cap to trap the heat in and funnel the vapor.
We could raise and lower the carb cap, to clear the vapor, placed the glass piece to our lips and started inhaling.
What a sensation…
Honestly, one draw was enough to give us straight away a great hit and settle the mood. What power, and flavor! It was a huge thing, so get prepared and keep in mind that the hit will be strong from the first draw! The strawberry taste was well enhanced, smooth, such a great flavor.
Adding that with the magnetic carb cap, we could regulate and increase the density of the vapor as we preferred. The glass water filtration piece helped cool down the vapor and keep more flavor. The lowest temperatures (around 515 F) kept the vapor very smooth and flavorful, while the strongest one (600 – 610 F) gave the taste an extra push, ideal for those who enjoy their flavors strong.
We have to admit that we were bluffed by the vapor quality and power. We expected something great, but it exceeded our expectations. Using a domeless nail produced much bigger dabs and quicker heating up time than with a domed nail. Also, we did enjoy the lower temperatures especially, and the vapor was so smooth and flavorful. A real delight!
Dr. Dabber: Boost Black Edition vs. Ghost Vaporizer
In the Dr. Dabber family, there is also the Ghost Vaporizer, which shines with its fantastic vapor quality, superb design, and strong battery life.
The Ghost is an excellent performer, and can also get the very best out of oil and wax concentrates, just like the Boost Black Edition. The device is well-built, nice looking and straightforward to use. Just like with the Boost Black Edition, there are no temperature settings, no waiting for heat-up times, and a unique button feature to get started quickly and efficiently.
Both the Ghost and the Boost Black Edition are surprising when it comes to vapor taste and quality, as they are both exceeding the expectations for the users’ great pleasure. On the downside, the Ghost has a plastic mouthpiece, which might slightly taint the taste. However, this is not affecting the overall performance.
While the Ghost and the Boost Black Edition are playing in different categories, they both share similar features, which proves that Dr. Dabber is a quality provider!

Our Overall Experience: a Winner!
Happy is not enough to describe our experience, we were blown away by the flavor and the power the Dr. Dabber Boost Black Edition had to offer.
What an experience! Some would point the limited temperatures flexibility, however, the Black Edition is still able to do more than just the job and to offer an amazing personalized vaping experience. The nails are the key feature to offer not only the choice to vape different types of concentrates but also with different types of heatings methods, to get the very best out of your wax or oil.
If you are looking to advance to the next step, then it is the perfect upgrade from vape pens to reach the higher category.
