A vaporizer extracts the active ingredients from herbal material without burning. Materials are heated to the point of vaporization. The extracted vapor is comprised primarily of the active ingredients. With burning, much of your material simply goes up in smoke.

Vaporizers come in all shapes and sizes. Consumers need to be aware that a large number of vaporizers currently flooding the market fail to meet our strict quality standards. Vaping Daily’s list of the best vaporizers is thoroughly vetted and can help you find the device that will deliver high performance.

The Three Types of Vaporizers:

All marijuana vaporizers can be described as one of three types – Vape Pens, Portable Vaporizers, and larger Desktop units. In a nutshell, vape pens and portable vaporizers are designed to be portable. Desktop vaporizers are designed for home use. We have tested and assessed the quality, versatility, and efficiency of hundreds of devices. We don’t want to see you get ripped off. Our job is to help you choose a product that will give you your money’s worth, and you will enjoy. The best vaporizers for every category have been listed below.

Go to:

Top Portable Vaporizers

We are going to start off our list of the best vaporizers by looking at the top portable vape devices. Portable vaporizers are less discreet than vape pens. However, they are still portable enough to fit in your pocket. Portables usually offer more features and a larger battery capacity than a vape pen for longer, more intense sessions. In fact, some portables are so good they rival the intensity and vapor quality of a desktop unit.

Extra features often include temperature control so you can customize the experience. Portable vaporizers are designed for dry herb although many come with attachments to vaporize waxes, concentrates, and even e-liquids (like our #1 ranked vaporizer).

Best Desktop Vapes

Best Desktop Vapes

Desktop vaporizers are the largest type of herbal vaping device. They are designed for home use and plug into a standard wall socket for power. Desktops users more power than portable, handheld vaporizers. Although they are bigger than other types of dry herb vapes, the prices are not as high as you might think. Not only that, but many desktop vaporizers have a lifetime warranty. They are an excellent investment that will enhance your private, in-home vaping sessions.

Desktop vape products are sometimes dismissed as being too bulky. However, the increased size and power can translate into an increase in vapor quality. Desktop vaporizer prices vary, but there is a model for almost any budget. Check out our top-rated desktop devices in different price categories:

A compartment in the unit houses a cleaning brush, liquid pad, and an oil bottle. Using the Herbalizer with the whip or balloon provides fantastic results. The vapor is second to none. The balloons also have squeeze valves to prevent any vapor leaks, which is a welcome feature.

PLENTY Vaporizer

$249.99Dry Herb and Concentrates

Dry Herb and Concentrates

The PLENTY vaporizer is a unique model among desktop devices. Why is it unique? It is the only high-end device that’s able to vaporize both thick oils and dry herb. This makes it plenty useful, pardon the pun! The quality combined with versatility is why the PLENTY has earned a spot on the list of the top rated vaporizers. Concentrates and oils are becoming more and more popular.

The PLENTY is a smaller desktop vaporizer. It could be considered a large portable, but with the power of a desktop unit. Vapor is inhaled through a metal coil that cools the vapor before it reaches the mouthpiece. Temperature control is accurate and better than most products, making it easy to adjust vapor according to taste.

If there is one drawback to the PLENTY, it’s the length of the cord. An extension cord is a must, especially in group settings where it is most likely to be passed around.

Made by Storz & Bickel, the same folks who make the Volcano vaporizer, the Plenty desktop device is made by one of the best companies in the business. You are getting your money’s worth here. Especially when you consider the quality and features it offers. In this price range, the PLENTY is a no-brainer.

  • Awesome build quality

  • Fast heat up time
  • Amazing vapor
  • Tons of vapor produced very quickly
  • Temperature control

  • Device does get hot
  • Hard to see temperature settings

Desktop vaporizers are a varied lot, with choices ranging from less than $100 to nearly $800. While cheaper options are always around, for the price and quality, you might as well invest in a good unit. The Herbalizer is hands down the best, but for those on a budget, the other options listed above can still give you a satisfying vape.

While vape pens and portables are more in demand, desktop vaporizers have their place. Every serious medical marijuana user should have at least one in their stable of devices. The features and quality of vapor production are unmatched by any pen or portable vaporizer.

If you are a strictly at-home user, then desktop devices are perfect for you. There is no need to worry about battery life since they are plugged in. Also, their multiple features allow you to vape in peace and comfort.

When it comes to desktop vaporizers, power over portability is key.

History of Marijuana Vaporizers

The First Years

We were able to roughly trace the origins of marijuana vaporizers although it was not easy! The exact specifics of the invention and development are unclear. One assumption is that the very first version of cannabis vaporizers was the Jamaican pipe. The pipe used water and hot coal to produce vapor from the herb; however, this claim can’t be verified by any written record.

In the ‘70s, earlier versions of vaporizers using conduction via soldering irons were used. Unfortunately, the plant was commonly burned and carbonized in this process. Soldering irons just didn’t work.

Another theory of the invention of cannabis vaporizers dates back to 1989 when a certain Dr. Lunglife sent a manuscript to High Times magazine. The manuscript contained instructions on how to build a vaporization machine with the use of RadioShack parts. Dr. Lunglife explained why and how vaporization was safer than smoking it, even when there was still no scientific research at the time.

The text was published in the magazine’s 1989 issue and is now the earliest written record of the promotion of marijuana vaporizers available today.

Dr. Lunglife’s Weed Vaporizer

We don’t know who Dr. Lunglife is or what became of him. The mysterious Dr. Lunglife prescribed a two-step process. First, extracting concentrated oil from cannabis flowers. Second, brush the oil onto the thread of a light bulb which served as the heating apparatus. The same person then sent a related manuscript to the magazine later in the same year with instructions for building a device that was able to draw vapor directly from the plant instead of the black cannabis oil.

Despite the efforts of the individual operating under the name “Dr. Lunglife”, no trend toward vaporizers materialized. It was not until four years later that the concept of vaporization was heard from again. That was 1993 with Eagle Bill.

Rise to Fame

In 1993, Eagle Bill, a cannabis activist who advocated the medical uses of marijuana, first experienced vaporizing the plant when a California grower used a heating gun to extract the THC vapor. During this period, the use of heating guns had become quite popular among marijuana users. This coincided with the time when the benefits of marijuana started to spread.

This paved the way for Eagle Bill to enhance the idea and invented the ‘shake and vape,’ which was inspired by ancient Egyptian methods of vaporizing marijuana using hot stones to keep the temperature at a certain level. The shake and vape were later known as “Eagle Bill’s peace pipe of the future.”

Eagle Bill brought his hand-held vaporizer to the 7th Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam. Thousands of people tried and experienced ‘vaping’ at Eagle Bill’s exhibit.

Modern Marijuana Vaporization

Later on, marijuana users discovered the forced air system vaporization process. Forced air vaporization uses hot air over marijuana using a fan. This process is the same process used in the Volcano vaporizer.

The Volcano became the most idyllic marijuana vaporizer in the market since its formal inception in 1996. The only drawback that kept people from buying this type of device was the price. The first Volcanos sold for around $800 a piece. Of course, now the prices have come way down.

The development of marijuana vaporizers has continued since then. There are more and more companies investing in the creation of advanced, powerful, and portable devices that marijuana users are loving.

As you already know, there are three basic types of marijuana vaporizers being used: the vape pen, portable, and the desktop vapes.

Vaporizers Guide and FAQs

What is a vaporizer?

Put simply; it’s an electronic device used to heat herbal and botanical material to the point of vaporization. Ignition temperature is the temperature at which a material combusts. Combustion is a wild chain of chemical reactions that release a host of toxins. The idea of a vaporizer is to avoid combustion and use vaporization to extract the active ingredients of herbal materials. The vapor is used for medicinal as well as recreational inhalation.

How does a vaporizer work?

Vaporizers can be either battery powered or plug into a power source such as a wall socket or USB port. A vaporizer works by using the power to heat an element to specific temperatures. The heating element is located in the oven or chamber where the herb is placed. The heat is applied to herbal material causing vaporization, which is essentially the boiling temperature of the active ingredients. The vapor is then inhaled by the user aka vaper. Hence the term “vaping” is coined and is used instead of smoking.

Convection Vs. Conduction

A vaporizer applies heat to materials via two different means. Convection is when air is heated and then circulated through the herbal material to cause vaporization. The air is then drawn from the vaporizer and inhaled.

Conduction heating vaporizes herbal material by placing it in a chamber with a hot surface. In a nutshell, convection uses hot air whereas conduction applies heat directly to the material.

Are vaporizers legal?

Vaporizers are legal in most countries when used exclusively to vaporize tobacco or other types of plants or chemicals (except drugs). In the US, laws can vary by state. Some states may regard vaporizers as potential drug paraphernalia is illegal; in those cases, vendors have to limit themselves to advertise vaporizers as devices to vaporize only tobacco or herbs.

However, in most States, vaporizers have the similar restrictions as tobacco cigarettes, i.e. sale is prohibited to people under 18, and also vaping in public places is prohibited.

Medical marijuana patients in New York are not permitted to smoke marijuana rather patients are advised to use a vaporizer.

What are the types of vaporizers?

There are three basic types of vaporizers:

  • Hand-held portable vaporizers
  • Vape Pens
  • Desktop vaporizers

Is it difficult to use a vaporizer?

Generally, the answer is no, but it depends on the type of a device. The most hands-on aspect of using a vaporizer is the cleaning and maintenance or refilling the heating chamber. If your vaporizer offers a number of technical functions, make sure to thoroughly read the user manual for guidance. Aside from that, one should always be careful with the heating element, which can get very hot. With little experience, anyone can use these products without much hassle.

Does a vaporizer smell when using it?

Compared to smoking, there’s hardly any noticeable smell when vaporizing. However, a mild odor might be detected in your surroundings. Smoke odor lingers. Vapor tends to dissipate quite quickly.

Are there any side effects to vaping weed, instead of smoking it?

Currently, there are no documented instances of health-related effects from using a vaporizer. It will take some time to gather enough information to accurately assess what the long-term effects of vaporizing are.

Is a vaporizer the same as a bong?

No. A bong relies upon combustion, which may result in the release of harmful toxins similar to smoking cigarettes.

Are vaporizers noisy?

Not at all. Even the cheapest forced air vaporizers won’t generate more sound than the hum of a brand new fan.

What is the best temperature for my device?

As every product is different, there isn’t an ideal temperature. Also, the ideal temperature range depends on the type of material you use. Usually, vaporizers perform best when set between 335 and 420 degrees Fahrenheit.

I vape herbs, is grinding them necessary?

If you want to get the best results from vaping, finely grinding your herbs is the way to go. When you grind the herbs, it produces smaller particles, which ultimately increases the surface of the herb in contact with the heat. As a result, vapor will come through easier and more aromatic. And you’ll get a better, crisper flavor. Fine ground material will be thoroughly vaporized, and little to no material will go to waste.

How can I tell when my blends are finished when vaporizing?

It all depends on your preference. Some users will stop when the blends have turned light brown; others will vaporize until the blends are darker. However, you should refill the chamber as soon as you start getting dry hits or a burned taste.

What is a temperature control vaporizer feature? What does it do?

Temperature control vaporizers adjust the level of heat used to vaporize materials. You can customize the intensity of a vape session by adjusting the temperature. The higher the temperature, the more vapor is produced, and the hits are more intense. Lower temperature settings give you a relaxed, chilled out session.

How do I clean my vaporizer?

It depends on the type of a device. Most portable vaporizers require little to no cleaning, but glass vaporizers require frequent rinsing with hot water and solvents. (Vaping Daily recommends using isopropyl alcohol as a cleaning agent.) Most vaporizers come with cleaning kits to help make the process easy for you.

Types of Vaporizers

For people new to the world of vaporizers, we want to provide you more details to understand the different types of vaporizers. It can be confusing sorting through all the products and try to find something that is comfortable and easy for to use, Most importantly, you want the device that will give you the best vaping experience.

Vape Pens

Vape pens are the smallest vaporizers. They are designed to carry in a pocket, purse or handbag. If you want something that is easily concealed and won’t look very conspicuous, then a vape pen is the way to go. Vape pens often look like common objects you would carry in your pockets – pens, lighters, inhalers, etc.

What sets one vape pen apart from another is what they can vaporize. Most of the time, these vapes are so small they can only vape a single material. Consumers usually have to choose between something that can vape concentrates, dry herb or e-liquid. There are some exceptions, however, as some vape pens work with multiple materials.

Materials that can be used in a vaporizer or vape pen include:

  • Concentrate – A concentrate includes waxes and oils. There is a wide variety of materials you can use with vape pens that are suitable to use with concentrates. One of the drawbacks to using oils or waxes in your vape pen is that these tend to cause severe build up. You will have to clean concentrate vaping pens after every use if you want them to last.If you don’t, the gunky build up can melt onto the heating element and cause it to malfunction. It can also leave behind a residue that is unpleasant to taste.
  • Dry Herb – Dry herb vape pens are the most common type. They work with any number of loose leaf and particulate matter. They also require the least amount of maintenance and are the easiest to use. If you are an experienced dry herb vape user, then you probably want to go with a pen that allows for multiple temperature settings. This lets you get the best vaping experience to suit your tastes and ensures that you can vape just about anything.

Because dry herb vapes are so common, you are going to have plenty of choices to pick from and a large range of prices to choose. That means you will have to do your research if you want the best product on the market. Use Vaping Daily’s list of the best vaporizers as your guide.

  • E-Liquid – Vape pens that use e-liquid tend to function much like electronic cigarettes. Many of them are even designed to look like traditional cigarettes. A vape pen for e-liquid will typically have a small tank that you manually fill with e-liquid.

In most cases, the e-liquid is made from nicotine, a base, and a flavoring. The base varies between PG (propylene glycol) and VG (vegetable glycerin). PG is thin and runny, and it is the least likely of the two to cause an allergic reaction. It is the most commonly used base, and it comes from manufacturing processes. VG is thicker and sweeter.

Portable Vaporizers

Portable vaporizers are larger than pen vapes and have larger battery capacity. They can still fit in a large pocket most of the time, but they aren’t nearly as inconspicuous. You are probably going to have a much harder time passing them off as a non-vaping device. However, there are still some camouflaged options for those who want to vape on the sly.

Portable vapes tend to have a lot more options than their pen counterparts. Many of them offer multi-functionality and can use concentrates, dry herb, and e-liquid. But the larger size and multi-functionality also means that they tend to be more expensive.

Hand-held vaporizers are ideal for use at home or on the go. The average battery life is about two to three hours. Portable vaporizers are probably the most popular type of vaporizer. Why? Because they are the happy medium between functionality and portability that serves the requirements the majority of consumers.

It is important for consumer to be aware that not all portable vaporizers are alike. Not even close! Many portable vaporizers flooding the market today are generic junk. We have tested hundreds of devices to compile the list of the best quality products that you can rely on.

Desktop Vaporizer

A desktop vaporizer is the big daddy of vapor making devices. They do not use a battery. Instead, they plug into a wall outlet in your home. And generally speaking, desktops are just for home use. You can pack them up and take them with you somewhere, but you aren’t likely to be able to use them while you are traveling somewhere. They are too bulky and complex to take out of your bag and start vaping wherever you are.

Desktop vaporizers should sit on a flat surface and be plugged into a constant power supply to work properly. The big advantage to buying a large device like this though is that you get a more authentic vaping experience. The vaporizer can produce massive quantities of vapor.

Not to say that every desktop vape is a great buy. There are some lemons out there. And if you want a great desktop vape, you are usually going to have to pay upwards of $150. The good news is that desktop units usually have a fantastic warranty.

There are different ways that a desktop vaporizer can deliver vapor. Examples include:

  • Bag – Bag vapes or balloon vapes require placing a compatible balloon on a desktop vaporizer to collect the vapor. The bag or balloon fills with vapor as the device heats up. After a few minutes, detach and take the balloon enjoy. This gives you portability and allows you to share easily. You may also be able to just open the vent and let the room fill with the vapor. It’s a waste of vapor, to be honest, but it can be an effective way to let everyone enjoy it at once.

Whip – The whip style of desktop device refers to a vape with tubes running out of it. These are mouthpiece tubes, and anyone can just latch on and take draws as the machine fills with vapor. Many desktop vaporizers allow for multiple whips to be installed at once. The whip gives the person vaping a direct route to the heating source, so the vapor is usually purer and tastier.

Where Will You Be Doing Most of Your Vaping?

The final aspect of choosing the best product we will be looking at is location. Where will you be using your vaporizer? Where do you spend most of your days? And what does that say about what type of vaporizer is best for you? Let’s take a look.

Spend Most of Your Day at Home

Whether you work from home, are a stay-at-home person, or you’re just simply unemployed, the fact remains that you spend a lot of time at home. You are lucky because you can get a quality desktop vaporizer for amazing vapor. We would recommend the Herbalizer or the PLENTY. If your budget isn’t quite as high, then perhaps the Arizer Extreme Q will fit the occasion.

Spend Most of Your Days in Public

Whether because you are an extrovert who loves being around people or you hate sitting at home, some people just spend a lot of time out and about. If you are out of the home and out in public, you need a vaporizer that is portable and offers you a level of privacy. We would recommend that you take a look at a portable vaporizer.

The V2Pro Series 3 ($129) and the Mig Vapor Matrix ($139) are small but effective. If none of those suit your fancy and you have a mid to high budget, then you may want to look at the Pax 3 ($274.99) or FireFly 2 ($229.94). There is a device for every budget. Just stick with the proven and tested performers.

Spend a Lot of Time at Friend’s Houses

If you are often hanging out with friends at different houses and plan to be sharing your vape, then a portable device is an ideal choice. A vape pen does not have enough battery capacity to share, and desktop vaporizers are a bit too bulky to pack up and move all the time. If you have a larger budget, then we recommend the Mig Vapor DRAY or the V2Pro’s Series 3/Series 7.

Best Dry Herb Vaporizers of 2018:

  • V2Pro Series 7 ($129.99)
  • The DRAY by Mig Vapor ($139.95)
  • PAX 3 ($274.99)
  • Mig Vapor Matrix ($139.95)
  • G Pen Elite ($149.95)
  • Firefly 2 ($329.95)
  • V2Pro Series 7 ($49.99)
  • Mig Vapor Torpedo ($89.99)
  • The Herbalizer ($729)
  • Arizer Extreme Q ($169.99)

  1. Health Canada recommends vaporizing for medical cannabis patients.which makes sense over combustion. But try getting medical coverage for either the appliance or the medicine…how can it not be covered by medical insurance? The LPC needs to placate the insurance companies,or simply tell them to suck it,life is not guaranteed to putt along unchanged. People on disability are being prescribed cannabis, but have to pay for it themselves,at street prices no less(yes, that is a fact)! The LPC is trying to double dip here: “It’s compassion!” “It’s medical cannabis!! Dump your opioids!!” When really and truly…cannabis is primarily being positioned as a retail venture with patients as an after thought. And then there is also the punishment piece! 15 years in jail omg, what nonsense…the black market isnt going anywhere, and the LPC is going backwards on that facet of the issue. The rhetoric being used indicates a disconnect from the main reason for legalizing it in the first place: compassion.
