Best Desktop Vapes

Best Desktop Vapes The largest of the basic types, desktop vaporizers offer users more power than the other two at the expense of portability. Though they are larger than other types of dry herb vapes, the prices are not as high as you might think.

Desktop vaporizers are usually dismissed as being too bulky to own. However, the increase in size also means an increase in vapor quality. Check out our top-rated desktop devices in different price categories:

$729 $599Dry Herb and Concentrates

The Herbalizer Desktop Marijuana VaporizerIf money’s no object, and you’re looking for the best desktop vaporizer bar none, the Herbalizer is the way to go. For $599, you’re getting a vaporizer that’s capable of using the dry herb, wax, and concentrates, and it offers both bag and whip options for delivering vapor.

A bit sterile-looking in the looks department, you might confuse the Herbalizer as being a medical instrument. And you won’t be wrong since the Herbalizer can also be used for aromatherapy, basically filling a room with vapor to help people relax.

There’s a compartment in the unit that houses a cleaning brush, liquid pad, and an oil bottle. Using the Herbalizer with the whip or balloon will give you fantastic results. The balloons also have squeeze valves to prevent any vapor leaks, which is a welcome feature.

The Herbalizer heats up faster than anything else on the market. It also stores your last temperature setting to ensure you don’t have to fiddle with the controls every time you start a vape session. Temperature control is very precise, as well, since it employs an advanced halogen light bulb, compared to the usual metal or ceramic element of other vaporizers.

If you are on the lookout for the best desktop vaporizer, and have an extra $599 lying around, the Herbalizer is the only option you should consider.

Arizer Extreme Q

$169.99Dry Herb and Concentrates

Arizer Extreme QA desktop vaporizer with a variety of ways to deliver vapor—from whips to balloons—the Arizer Extreme Q is the best unit in the $100–$200 price range, given its relatively low price and the features it offers.

Stylish and sleek, the Extreme Q has a bright display and comes with a swiveling action whip. Delivery systems include Direct Draw via Whip, Forced Air-Assisted Whip, and Forced Air Balloon Delivery. There is also a controllable fan to adjust the amount of vapor you inhale, a temperature system, and a remote control.

All these features at a price at the low end of the $200–$300 range make the Arizer Extreme Q one of the best in its class.

PLENTY Vaporizer

$249.99Dry Herb and Concentrates

Dry Herb and Concentrates From the same company that manufactures the VOLCANO, the PLENTY Vaporizer is a unique model among desktop vaporizers in that it is the only high-end vaporizer that’s able to use thick oils and dry herb. This makes it even more useful, since concentrates are becoming more popular these days.

The size is also small for a desktop vaporizer, making it seem more like a large portable vaporizer, but with the power of a desktop unit. Vapor is inhaled through a metal coil that cools the vapor before it reaches the mouthpiece. Temperature control is accurate and better than most vaporizers, making it easy to adjust according to taste.

If there is one drawback to the PLENTY Vaporizer, it’s the length of the cord, which isn’t long enough to use comfortably. An extension cord is a must, especially in group settings where it is most likely to be passed around.

For the price, you are getting your money’s worth here with the quality and features it offers. In this price range, the PLENTY Vaporizer is a no-brainer.

Desktop vaporizers are a varied lot, with choices ranging from less than $100 to nearly $800. While cheaper options are always around, for the price and quality, you might as well invest in a good unit. The Herbalizer is hands down the best, but for those on a budget, the other options listed above can still give you a satisfying vape.

While vaporizer pens and portables are more in demand, desktop vaporizers have their place. Every serious medical marijuana user should have at least one in their stable of devices. The features and quality of vapor production are unmatched by any pen or portable vaporizer.

If you are a strictly at-home user, then desktop vaporizers are perfect for you. There is no need to worry about battery life since they are plugged in. Also, their multiple features allow you to vape in peace and comfort.

When it comes to desktop vaporizers, power over portability is key.

History of Marijuana Vaporizers

The First Years

Although the particularities of the invention of marijuana vaporizers are unclear, there is a lot of available information as to where it originated from and who is responsible for its conception.

One assumption is that the very first version of cannabis vaporizers was the Jamaican pipe, which used water and hot coal to produce vapor out of the herb; however, this claim is not supported in writing.

In the ‘70s, earlier versions of vaporizers using conduction via soldering irons were used. Unfortunately, the plant was commonly burned and carbonized in this process.

Another theory regarding the invention of cannabis vaporizers is when a certain Dr. Lunglife sent a manuscript to High Times magazine in 1989 containing instructions on how to build a vaporization machine with the use of RadioShack parts. In the said article, Dr. Lunglife explained why and how vaporization was safer than smoking it, even when there was still no scientific research to back-up such information.

The text was published in the magazine’s 1989 issue and is now the earliest written record of the promotion of marijuana vaporizers available today.

The mysterious Dr. Lunglife first used a two-step process, which was introduced in the published article. The process involved extracting concentrated oil from cannabis flowers, then brush the oil onto the thread of a light bulb which served as the heating apparatus. The same person sent a related manuscript to the magazine in December 1989 with instructions on building a vaporizer that was able to draw vapor directly from the plant instead of extracting black cannabis oil first.

Rise to Fame

In 1993, Eagle Bill, a cannabis activist who advocated the medical uses of marijuana, first experienced vaporizing the plant when a Californian grower used a heating gun to extract the THC by vapor. During this period, the use of heating guns had become quite popular among marijuana users, since it was the same time when the benefits of vaporizing the plant started to spread.

This paved the way for Eagle Bill to enhance the idea and invented the ‘shake and vape’, which was drawn from ancient Egyptian methods of vaporizing marijuana using hot stones to keep the temperature at a certain level. The shake and vape were later known as “Eagle Bill’s peace pipe of the future” and is considered to be one of the most efficient hand-held vaporizers that many medicinal users favor.

Eagle Bill brought his invention to the 7th Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam for everyone to try and thousands were able to experience ‘vaping’ at the said exhibit.

Modern Marijuana Vaporization

Later on, marijuana users were able to discover the forced air system vaporization process, wherein hot air is forced over marijuana using a fan. This meticulous process is the same process used in the Volcano Vaporizer, which became one of the most idyllic marijuana vaporizers in the market since its formal inception in 1996. The only drawback that kept people from buying this type of vaporizer was the price, which started at around $800 a piece, but, later on, went down when the digital version was released.

The development of marijuana vaporizers has continued since then, with more and more companies investing in the creation of digital, powerful, and more portable devices that marijuana users are now checking out.

At present, there are four types of marijuana vaporizers being used: The vape pen, portable, and the desktop vapes. If you scroll the page up a bit, you can check out our top rated products for each of these categories

Vaporizers Guide and FAQs

What is a vaporizer?

Put simply, it’s a battery-powered device used to turn the medium (which can be e-liquids, herbs, waxes etc.) into vapor, used for medicinal as well as recreational inhalation.

How does a vaporizer work?

Vaporizers are battery-powered devices, which have a heating element and a tank that stores the material (e.g. e-liquids, herbs or waxes). When the material in the tank gets in contact with the heating element, they turn into vapor. The vapor is then inhaled by the user aka vaper. Hence the term “vaping” is coined and is used instead of smoking.

Are vaporizers legal?

They are legal in most countries when used exclusively to vaporize tobacco or other types of plants or chemicals (except drugs). In the United States, drug paraphernalia is illegal; vendors have to limit themselves to advertise vaporizers as devices to vaporize only tobacco or herbs. However, in most States, they have the similar restrictions as tobacco cigarettes i.e. sale is prohibited to people under 18, and also vaping in public places is prohibited.

What are the types of vaporizers?

There are three types of vaporizers: Portable Vaporizers, Vape Pens, and Desktop Vaporizers.

Is it difficult to use a vaporizer?

Generally no, but it depends on the type of vaporizer. The most trouble that is caused by more complex vaporizers is the annoyance of refilling the chamber or cleaning it. Aside from that, one must always be careful with the heating element, which can get very hot. However, with little experience, anyone can use vaporizers without much hassle.

Does a vaporizer smell when using it?

Compared to smoking, there’s hardly any noticeable smell when vaporizing. However, a light scent might impregnate your surroundings.

Are there any side effects to vaping weed, instead of smoking it?

Currently, there are no documented instances of health-related effects from using a vaporizer. It will take some time to gather enough information to accurately assess what the long-term effects of vaporizing are.

Is a vaporizer the same as a bong?

No. A bong relies upon combustion, which may result in the release of harmful toxins similarly to cigarettes.

Are vaporizers noisy?

Not at all. Even the cheapest forced air vaporizers won’t generate more sound than the hum of a brand new fan.

What is the best temperature for my vaporizer?

As every vaporizer is different, there isn’t an ideal temperature. Also, the ideal temperature range depends on the type of material you use. Generally, vaporizers perform best when set between 335 and 420 degrees Fahrenheit.

I vape herbs, is grinding them necessary?

If you want to get the best results from vaping, finely grinding your herbs is the way to go. When you grind the herbs, it produces smaller particles, which ultimately increases the surface of the herb in contact with the vapor. As a result, vapor will come through easier and more aromatic, and you’ll get a better, crisper flavor. Also, the material will be thoroughly vaped and little to no material will go to waste.

How can I tell when my blends are finished when vaporizing?

It all depends on your preference. Some users will stop when the blends have turned light brown, others will vaporize until the blends are way darker. However, you should refill the chamber as soon as you start getting dry hits or a burned taste.

What is a temperature control feature? What does it do?

It relies on a variable impedance so you can select a temperature range. This will help you select how hot your vaporizer gets to get a deeper, denser hit — by selecting a higher temperature — or prevent your throat and lungs from getting sore — by selecting a lower temperature. Temperature control mods allow you to vape at extremely low resistances.

How do I clean my vaporizer?

It depends on the type of vaporizer. Most portable vaporizers require little to no cleaning, but glass vaporizers require frequent rinsing with hot water and solvents. More powerful vape mods come with cleaning kits, which make the process easy.

What are convection and conduction based vaporizers? What’s better?

Conduction based vaporizers heat the herb/oil/wax/e-liquid directly through contact with a metal plate or heating element. Convection based vaporizers heat the herb/oil/wax/e-liquid indirectly by blowing hot air to them and extracting the flavors. Conduction based vaporizers are affordable but not ideal since the direct contact with the herb/oil/wax/e-liquid might burn it and lead to carbonization. The convection style vapes are becoming more popular as they offer a better, crisp flavor.

Types of Vaporizers

Vaporizers are a new enough industry that not a lot of people know much about them. The ones who have been vaping for years are familiar with the ins and outs of what is available and already have their preferences staked out. But for the many that keep coming to the folds each year, it can be confusing sorting through all the products and trying to find something that is comfortable and easy for them to use and that gives them a good vaping experience.

So we’re looking at all the different types of vaporizers out there. No matter what you see for sale, it fits into one of these categories. So before you make the purchase, read our handy guide to see exactly what you are getting.

Vape Pens

Vape pens are usually the smallest vaporizers. They are made to fit into your pocket, purse or handbag with ease. If you want something that is easily concealed and won’t look very conspicuous, then a vape pen is the way to go. You can vape anywhere you like with these, and they often look like common objects you would take in your pockets anyway- pens, lighters, inhalers, etc.

What really sets vape pens apart from one another is what they can vaporize. Usually, these vapes are so small they can only vape a single material. Consumers usually have to choose between something that can vape concentrates, dry herb or e-liquid. There are some exceptions, however, and some vape pens work with multiple materials. But you will often have to switch out components from the pen to get it to work with a different material each time you want to use something different.

  • Concentrate – A concentrate includes waxes and oils. So there is actually a wide variety of materials you can use with vape pens that are suitable to use with concentrates. One of the drawbacks to using oils or waxes in your vape pen is that these tend to cause severe build up. While other types of vape pens can get away with being cleaned after every few uses, you will have to clean concentrate vaping pens after every use if you want them to last.

If you don’t, the gunky build up can melt onto the heating element and cause it to malfunction. It can also leave behind a residue that is unpleasant to taste.

  • Dry Herb – Dry herb vape pens are the most common type. They work with any number of loose leaf and particulate matter. They also require the least amount of maintenance and are generally the easiest to use. If you are an experienced dry herb vape user, then you probably want to go with a pen that allows for multiple temperature settings. This lets you get the best vaping experience to suit your tastes and ensures that you can vape just about anything.

Because dry herb vapes are so common, you are going to have plenty of choices to pick from and a large range of prices to choose. That means you will have to really do your research if you want the best vaporizer on the market.

  • E-Liquid – Vape pens that use e-liquid tend to function much like electronic cigarettes. A lot of them are even designed to look like traditional cigarettes. While you can buy your own e-liquid from a company that isn’t the same as the vape pen manufacturer or even make your own e-liquid, a lot of these vape pens are only compatible with liquid canisters and refills that come from their own company. If you plan to get your e-liquid from somewhere else than the vape pen manufacturer, then you should check into what their policy is on using outside e-liquids.

In most cases, the e-liquid is made from nicotine, a base, and a flavoring. The base varies between PG (propylene glycol) and VG (vegetable glycerin). PG is thin and runny, and it is the least likely of the two to cause an allergic reaction. It is the most commonly used base, and it comes from manufacturing processes. VG is thicker and sweeter and more likely to cause an allergic reaction. It generally comes from natural sources.

Portable Vaporizers

Portable vapes are a bit larger than pen vapes. They can still fit in a large pocket most of the time, but they aren’t nearly as inconspicuous. You are probably going to have a much harder time passing them off as some sort of non-vaping device. However, there are still some camouflaged options for those who want to vape on the sly.

Portable vapes tend to have a lot more options than their pen counterparts. Many of them offer multi-functionality and can use concentrates, dry herb, and e-liquid. But the larger size and multi-functionality also means that they tend to be more expensive.

They are generally ideal for use at home or on the go. Their battery life usually starts out at 2-3 hours and goes up from there. Many people actually use only portable vapes and don’t bother with anything bigger for home use or smaller for use while away from home. Portable vapes tend toward a happy medium that comes with its own problems sometimes.

The biggest problem that many portable vapes have is that they can take a hit in vapor production and taste when compared to their desktop counterparts. That’s because they are often made of cheaper stuff or just don’t offer the options to get a really great vape. That’s not to say that there aren’t some great choices out there. A few of the portable vapes offer a vaping experience on par with what the desktop vapes provide. But these are few and far between, and you will need to do some research and be prepared to hand over a decent amount of money to get a truly great vaping experience from one of these.

Desktop Vaporizer

These are the big daddies of the vaporizer, and they are generally for use just at home. You can pack them up and take them with you somewhere, but you aren’t likely to be able to use them while you are traveling somewhere. They are too bulky and complex to just take out of your bag and start vaping wherever you are. They generally need to rest on a flat surface and may even require a constant power supply to work properly.

The big advantage to buying a large vaporizer like this though is that you get a more authentic vaping experience. The vaporizer is able to produce great quantities of vapor and reaches very specific heat levels. This allows for the best possible taste in the vapor. That’s not to say that every desktop vape is a great buy. There are definitely some lemons out there. And if you really want a great desktop vape, you are usually going to have to pay upwards of $300.

Now desktop vapes come in a few varieties. Their different forms and functions allow them to serve people who want to vape in different ways or who want to vape with their friends all at the same time.

  •  Bag – Bag vapes or balloon vapes usually require that you place a compatible balloon over the vaporizer’s vent. The balloon fills with vapor as the device heats up, and after a few minutes you can detach and take the balloon with you. This gives you portability and allows you to easily share with people who are across the room or nearby.  You may also be able to just open the vent and let the room fill with the vapor. It’s a waste of vapor, to be honest, but it can be an effective way to let everyone enjoy it at once.
  •  Whip – The whip style of desktop vaporizer refers to a vape with tubes running out of it. These are mouthpiece tubes, and anyone can just latch on and take draws as the machine fills with vapor. Many desktop vaporizers allow for multiple whips to be installed at once, so more than one person can enjoy the vapor as it is produced.

The whip gives the person vaping a direct route to the heating source, so the vapor is usually purer and tastier, but you can often get a decent vaping experience either way.

Where Will You Be Doing Most of Your Vaping?

The final aspect of choosing the best vaporizer we will be looking at is location. Location, location, location. Where do you spend most of your days? And what does that say about what type of vaporizer is best for you? Let’s take a look.

Spend Most of Your Day at Home

Whether you work from home, are a stay-at-home mom or you’re just simply unemployed, the fact remains that you spend a lot of time at home. You are lucky because you can actually get a quality desktop vaporizer for a lower price than you can get the same quality portable vaporizer. We would recommend the Arizer Extreme Q or the Volcano Vaporizer. If your budget isn’t quite as high, then definitely some of our top-rated portable vapes will also do the trick.

Spend Most of Your Days in Public

Whether because you are an extrovert who loves being around people or because you hate being at home, some people just spend a lot of time around other people. Whether hanging out in the downtown area of your city or at the local park, if this is your situation then you need something that is fairly discreet. We would first recommend that you take a look at our “Smallest of the Small Vaporizers” page, to see just how small and sneaky you can really get it.

The V2Pro Series 3x ($99) and the MigVapor Matrix ($139) are particularly small but effective. If none of those suit your fancy and you have a mid to high budget, then you may want to look at the Pax 3 Vaporizer ($274.99) or FireFly 2 Vaporizer ($329.95). If those are more than you’re looking to spend, you may want to go for a portable device such as the Series 7 if you like dry herb or any of these best dab pens, if you like waxes.

Spend a Lot of Time at Friend’s Houses

If you are often hanging out with friends at different houses and plan to be sharing your vape, then a portable vaporizer is definitely best for you. A vape pen is too inconsistent and doesn’t hold enough for even the entire circle to get a puff. The desktop vaporizers are a bit too bulky to pack up and move all the time. If you have a larger budget, then we definitely recommend the MigVapor DRE or the V2Pro’s Series 3/Series 7.

Wrapping it up

Choosing your first marijuana vaporizer can be challenging. We hope that this page helped you to find a perfect vaporizer in the comment. Thanks for being with us. Stay tuned and vape on!

  1. Health Canada recommends vaporizing for medical cannabis patients.which makes sense over combustion. But try getting medical coverage for either the appliance or the medicine…how can it not be covered by medical insurance? The LPC needs to placate the insurance companies,or simply tell them to suck it,life is not guaranteed to putt along unchanged. People on disability are being prescribed cannabis, but have to pay for it themselves,at street prices no less(yes, that is a fact)! The LPC is trying to double dip here: “It’s compassion!” “It’s medical cannabis!! Dump your opioids!!” When really and truly…cannabis is primarily being positioned as a retail venture with patients as an after thought. And then there is also the punishment piece! 15 years in jail omg, what nonsense…the black market isnt going anywhere, and the LPC is going backwards on that facet of the issue. The rhetoric being used indicates a disconnect from the main reason for legalizing it in the first place: compassion.
