Electronic Cigars: Benefits, Uses and Effects

Read more about electronic cigars and different types of electronic cigars: rechargeable and disposable at QuitDay.orgIf cigarette smokers can use e-cigarettes as an alternative to traditional cigarettes, cigar users can do the same with e-cigars. But what are e-cigars? Why bother with them? What makes them a healthier alternative to traditional cigars?

Before answering these questions, it’s important to be reminded of the negative effects traditional cigars can have on your health and wellbeing.

Effects of Cigars

Cigar smoking has become popular among many men (and some women) with the number of cigar smokers rising by 33% between 1996 and 2006. Sometimes reserved for celebrations, such as the birth of a new baby, a lit cigar can be smoked for an hour or more, compared to cigarettes lasting just a few minutes.

Cigars can be dangerous and the risks may be even greater than those of cigarettes. One rolled cigar can contain as much tobacco as an entire pack of traditional cigarettes. According to the National Institutes of Health, a single cigar can also contain up to 90 times more nitrosamines – cancer-causing compounds – than a cigarette. Additionally, cigars also contain tar, carbon monoxide, and ammonia, all of which are harmful to your health.

Despite non-inhalation of smoke, cigars also double the risk of cancer of the lips, mouth, throat, and esophagus. Immersing the mouth and throat with smoke increases exposes the skin and membranes of the body to the smoke’s toxins, thus increasing the cancer risk.

The E-Cigar

Though not as widely sold as e-cigarettes, e-cigars still have gained a following among ex-cigar users. Those looking for a nicotine delivery system that gives the sensation of actually holding and using a cigar but without the harmful effects may find the e-cigar a favorable alternative.

An e-cigar is composed of two main parts:

1. The battery – The part that provides power and contains the electronics of the device.
2. The cartridge or cartomizer – Where e-liquid is stored. This also typically contains the heating element, or atomizer, where e-liquid is vaporized.

Disposable or Reusable?

There are two types of e-cigars: disposable and reusable. While each have their benefits, the general rule is that if you are a light user and don’t want the hassle of refilling and recharging, disposable e-cigars are best. If you intend to use an e-cigar often, a reusable e-cigar is the smart choice.

Disposable E-Cigars

The type most often sold, disposable e-cigars come pre-filled with e-liquid and are good for about 100 puffs. The disposable e-cigar is used until its battery is dead or the e-liquid has run out, then thrown away.

The main advantage of disposables is that they are easy to use and don’t include the hassle of refilling.

Reusable E-Cigars

Designed for heavy users, reusable e-cigars are more cost effective than disposables. Recharging and refilling allow for anytime use. Reusables are also best suited for users who want to tinker with their devices to achieve the perfect cigar experience.

The main advantages of using reusables are:

1. Vapor and flavor is more pronounced, giving users a more realistic cigar experience. This experience is due to the larger battery/power capacity and the higher quality cartomizers/atomizers used.
2. Reusables allow users to change the e-liquid to whatever flavor and nicotine strength they prefer. Also, atomizers and cartomizers of varying vapor production capabilities can be swapped out anytime, allowing for a higher level of customization for users to create their perfect mix of preferences.

What About Automatic and Manual?

Most e-cigars are automatic, meaning a sensor chip is built into the battery that detects airflow whenever inhalation occurs. Once detected, the chip activates the battery to provide power to the atomizer, which then vaporizes the e-liquid.

However, there are some models – usually reusable ones – that are manual. Manual e-cigars have a button on the side of the battery, and whenever a user wants to take a puff, the button is pressed first to activate the atomizer to produce vapor.

Some users prefer automatic e-cigars because it simulates smoking a real cigar more closely. Others choose manual e-cigars because the sensors in automatic models don’t always accurately detect the airflow of inhalation, making the extra motion of button pressing a small sacrifice to ensure a good puff.

Why Choose E-Cigars?

E-cigars produce no smoke, and contain none of the cancer-causing agents found in traditional cigars. The vapor produced by e-cigars is virtually odorless and according to a study conducted by the University of Southern California, its second-hand smoke effect is ten times lower than regular cigarette smoke.

If you are looking for a healthier alternative to smoking cigars, e-cigars offer the next best thing without sacrificing the feel of smoke in your mouth (in vapor form) and nicotine delivery to fight cravings. Even the physical act of holding a tube-like device mimics the feel of holding a real cigar.

How to Quit

Smoking in any form – whether cigarettes, medical marijuana, or cigars – has been proven to be harmful to one’s health and to those around them.

QuitDay.org promotes a clean and smoke-free lifestyle, and recommends the use of e-cigars as a safer alternative to traditional cigars. You don’t need to risk your health, and the health of your family and friends, just to keep your nicotine cravings in check.
