Conduction vs Convection Dry Herb Pens
The style of heating used in weed pens can make a world of difference regarding the vaping experience. There are two styles of heating, conduction, and convection, and each has its pros and cons. If you had to consider one feature to choose a vape pen, make sure it is the heating style.
This is the traditional style of heating, and although becoming less popular, is still used in many of the popular brands and units. Conduction based vape pens have a chamber that has a heating element. The herbs vaporize when they get in direct contact with the heating element. The biggest benefit of conduction heating is that it is extremely fast, and you can be vaping your herbs in no time. The downsides include the chance of herbs getting roasted because of combustion. Since vape pens are not too powerful, the chances of combustion are very low. Also, conduction based heating can result in uneven vaporization i.e. some herbs left un-vaporized while some are getting roasted. These are ideal for people who enjoy the comparatively harsh, intense flavor.
Common materials for the heating chamber are ceramic, quartz and stainless steel. They are all good materials for conduction, but some are better than others. All have their pros and cons. For instance, ceramic heats evenly and is easy to clean, but takes longer to heat. Quartz is not as good a conductor but is much less expensive. And stainless steel is the best conductor of the three but is heavy and hard to clean.
Relatively new but becoming increasingly popular is the convection heating. These units blow extremely hot through the herb to turn them into vapor. The convection heat is relatively slow and can be slower if herbs are moist. However, they offer the best possible flavor as there is no combustion. Herbs are evenly and completely vaporized. Convection based units are ideal for people who like rich yet mellow flavor.
When choosing a pen that is going to turn a liquid to a gas, then convection is the better option of the two. Convection is essentially a form of heat transfer of liquids to gas. It makes perfect sense to use this type of chamber when vaping for that reason.
Ideal Temperature Settings for Vaping Herbs
Ideal temperature settings depend on many things including your device, the quality and moisture in the herbs, and your ideal flavor. However, generally speaking, here’s a quick guide to ideal temperature levels for vaping herbs if your pen features temperature control:
- 400°F and up: not recommended, can cause combustion
- 375-399°F: ideal for herbs with high moisture level, produces thick vapor and intense flavor
- 350- 374°F: ideal temperatures for fresh herbs, produces a decent amount of vapor and rich yet mellow flavor
- 325-349°F: ideal for extremely dry herbs, light vapor, decent flavor
- Below 325°F: not recommended, doesn’t produce enough vapor of flavor
It is not just about flavor and the amount of vapor that is important when it comes to the ideal temperature. Combustion of weed results in smoke which carries a lot of toxins with it. Keeping the temperature to the ideal level will vaporize the herb instead of burning it and will result in far fewer toxins.
