Best Dry Herb Vape Pens in 2018

Vape pens for dry herbs are small, compact devices with small LCD screens to adjust the temperature. They use either stainless steel or ceramic heating chamber to vape herbs.

Models have one button controls to adjust preset temperatures. They can also have precise temperature control, where users set the temperature to an exact degree. Vape pens can either use a convection or conduction heating method. Materials either come into direct contact (conduction) or have hot air blown through them (convection).

Matrix is yet another big hit dry herb vaporizer pen introduced by Mig Vapor. The vaporizer consists of plastic, but it is quite sturdy. Matrix is bigger as compared to the rest of the vape pens – which is a bit of nuisance, but it does make up for the good battery life and impressive performance.

What makes it my favorite weed pen is that unlike most other pens that offer two or three temperature levels, Mig Vapor Matrix provides complete control over the temperature. You can start from 300F and go all the way to 428F, with increments of one for ultimate customization. In other words, every dry herb vaper will love this pen for letting them fine tune it to their liking.

When it is at the highest temperature setting, it blows massive vapor clouds, but the taste gets a little harsh – though some of you might like it. It has a digital OLED display – yet another nice feature missing in most pens. The best thing is that it remembers your last settings, even if you restart it, so no need to set it up again to start a new session. This is possible because of the new feature called “Smart Memory Technology.”

It works well with wax, herb, and e-liquids. The larger ceramic heating chamber makes it the crispest vapor ever. Plus, the Matrix is fairly easy to refill and clean. The 40-second heat up time is not bad, but the build of the device is a bit fragile and also the price is a little high otherwise it could well have been our top first or second pick.

Key Features:
  • Digital OLED display
  • 300 to 435 degree F temperature control
  • 40-second heat up time
  • smart memory technology

Pros:

  • Dual-use vaporizer (vapes herbs and waxes)
  • An all-ceramic heating chamber
  • Digital OLED display
  • Adjustable temperature settings
  • Good customer service
  • Good vapor production

Cons:

  • Plastic mouthpiece breaks easily
  • Can overheat

Torpedo is yet another state of the art dry herb vaporizer pen by Mig Vapor, ideal for people who want to vape their flowers non-stop. It comes with one of the biggest battery capacities in vape pen for dry herb i.e. 2200 mAh to ensure uninterrupted sessions without any lapse in the performance. The advanced heating chamber of 1.7 ml provides a decent capacity, another reason for longer vaping sessions. Moreover, even if the battery runs out, you can use it even while charging – thanks to the pass-through technology.

The adjustable temperature offers maximum customization. The device has three eating temperature settings which provide a customizable vaping experience, depending on the kind of dry herbs you are using. It heats up within seconds without producing any burnt taste so that you will enjoy a clean flavor. It is available in red and black colors.

In addition to decent design and great performance, we loved how easy it is to use. The unique chamber design makes refilling and cleaning a breeze. Also, using the unit and adjusting settings is extremely simple, thanks to the one button interface.

The kit contains a mouthpiece, USB charging cable, three silicone mouthpiece covers, two long black silicone mouthpiece covers, a cleaning brush and extra mesh filters. The kit does not come with a wall charger, and you have to b33uy it separately, which is a better and faster way of charging and doesn’t make much sense not to include it in the kit.

Key Features:
  • Battery capacity: 2200 mAh
  • Chamber capacity: 1.7 ml
  • three separate heating temperatures

Pros:

  • Three preset temperatures
  • One-button controls
  • Good vapor production
  • Long-lasting, 2200mAh battery
  • Lightweight and compact

Cons:

  • Mouthpiece keeps coming loose

  • Slim, portable design

Tips to Pick the Best Dry Herb Vape Pen?

  • How often will you carry your pen around? If you travel a lot, consider one of the high-end pens and use it as your full-time vape. However, if you stay home mostly, and will use the pen once in a blue moon, consider a reasonably priced vape pen plus a high-quality, full-fledged vaporizer. No matter how good a pen is, it cannot match a vaporizer, so choose your vape after weighing portability and performance, and keeping your needs in mind.
  • Choose a pen that suits your vaping style. Vaping style does not only mean how you puff on the pen but also where and how you will use the pen. How often you will use it and how finely ground your herbs usually are.
What are features you want? Out of temperature control, digital display, speedy heat-up, bigger chamber, which features are important?
  • One of the key features of any vape pen is battery life. They usually don’t have a very long life, but you have to pick one depending on your vaping style. The longer battery normally also increases the size of the pen, so there’s a tradeoff. Running out of battery on the go can be a real bummer.
  • Keep the material of the vapor path in mind as it can make or break the overall flavor. The glass vapor path is ideal, but it can make the unit fragile. Ceramic is a close second and offers good quality vapor. A plastic path is also found in some vapes, but plastic or other cheap materials can release toxins into your vapor over time.

Conduction vs. Convection Dry Herb Pens

The style of heating used in weed pens can make a world of difference regarding the vaping experience. There are two styles of heating, conduction, and convection, and each has its pros and cons. If you had to consider one feature to choose a vape pen, make sure it is the heating style.

Conduction Heating

This is the traditional style of heating, and although becoming less popular, is still used in many of the popular brands and units. Conduction based vape pens have a chamber that has a heating element. The herbs vaporize when they get in direct contact with the heating element. The biggest benefit of conduction heating is that it is extremely fast, and you can be vaping your herbs in no time. The downsides include the chance of herbs getting roasted because of combustion. Since vape pens are not too powerful, the chances of combustion are very low. Also, conduction based heating can result in uneven vaporization i.e. some herbs left un-vaporized while some are getting roasted. These are ideal for people who enjoy the comparatively harsh, intense flavor.

Common materials for the heating chamber are ceramic, quartz and stainless steel. They are all good materials for conduction, but some are better than others. All have their pros and cons. For instance, ceramic heats evenly and is easy to clean, but takes longer to heat. Quartz is not as good a conductor but is much less expensive. And stainless steel is the best conductor of the three but is heavy and hard to clean.

Convection Heating

Relatively new but becoming increasingly popular is the convection heating. These units blow extremely hot through the herb to turn them into vapor. The convection heat is relatively slow and can be slower if herbs are moist. However, they offer the best possible flavor as there is no combustion. Herbs are evenly and completely vaporized. Convection based units are ideal for people who like rich yet mellow flavor.
When choosing a pen that is going to turn a liquid to a gas, then convection is the better option of the two. Convection is essentially a form of heat transfer of liquids to gas. It makes perfect sense to use this type of chamber when vaping for that reason.

Ideal Temperature Settings for Vaping Herbs

Ideal temperature settings depend on many things including your device, the quality and moisture in the herbs, and your ideal flavor. However, generally speaking, here’s a quick guide to ideal temperature levels for vaping herbs if your pen features temperature control:

  • 400F and up: not recommended, can cause combustion
  • 375-399F: ideal for herbs with high moisture level, produces thick vapor and intense flavor
  • 350- 374F: ideal temperatures for fresh herbs, produces a decent amount of vapor and rich yet mellow flavor
  • 325-349F: ideal for extremely dry herbs, light vapor, decent flavor
  • Below 325F: not recommended, doesn’t produce enough vapor of flavor

It is not just about flavor and the amount of vapor that is important when it comes to the ideal temperature. Combustion of weed results in smoke which carries a lot of toxins with it. Keeping the temperature to the ideal level will vaporize the herb instead of burning it and will result in far fewer toxins.

Overall

Dry herb vape pens are an ideal unit for people who want to vape their herbs on the go. They might not offer the performance of a vaporizer or mod, but they take convenience and portability to a whole new level. They can also be a good choice for those who vape herbs once in awhile and don’t want to invest in a more expensive unit.

The above list has been compiled after extensive research and based on the experience of our whole team to help you find the best dry herb vape pen. They will offer the best experience, irrespective of your vaping style. However, to get the best bang for your buck, we recommend that you do some research, read the last section of our guide, and then choose the pen that seems to fit your bill closely.

Thanks for the info. I have been having problems I guess with temperature… i use the kurkova – last a lots of hits BEFORE u charge the 1st time. Afterwards is a nightmare, so many others. I spent $70 on a huge ugly one that burned on the 2nd use. I can only smoke ‘on the go’ which means quick several hits on the bathroom. I need something that works. I dont care if its expensive as far as I dont get hanging in mammoth on my 1st nighr of a holyday no vape. Its $&@ annoying how unlucky I have been… which u recommend? Tks for sharing ! Merry Xmas

I spent a great deal of time researching my first vape pen. I purchased a V2 Pro Series 3 vape pen and found that it didn’t produce much vapor until recently. I purchased it in January 2018. Recently it started producing more vapor, and I was really enjoying it until Aug 8, 2018. Now it is totally unresponsive. So disappointed. The company has told me to return it under the warranty, but a new one or this repaired, they didn’t state, won’t arrive for 4 to 6 weeks. So very inconvenient. I had to buy the dry herb cartridge separately. Now do I buy the new Series 3x? Do my cartridges interchange with it? I am a little shy about buying a new one from this company because of this history. And this is about the price point I am interested in. Now I am not sure what to do, but I don’t want to wait 4 week without one, now that I have started using a vape. Thoughts?
