The iJoy Avenger is a dual-20700 box mod — but the kit comes with two 18650 adapters — that works with voice-activation. The Avenger chip comes with AI software that lets users enable certain functions. The Avenger features a zinc-alloy chassis and several RGB lights throughout its build.

Users can customize the color and frequency of the lights. They can also toggle on or off the voice-activation feature. The Avenger mod comes with the newly-released Avenger sub-ohm tank. The tank uses the brand-new, 0.15-ohm, X3 Mesh coil that features a mesh-heating element. The element covers more of the cotton/wood-pulp wick, so it produces larger, more nuanced plumes of vapor.

Avenger Review: An Up-Close Look

The Avenger mod stands at just under 90mm (3.5”). It measures about 31mm (1.2”) across, which, with its center-mounted 510-connection, gives it ample room to accommodate many size tanks. The mod has many lines across its front in a criss-cross pattern that gives it a unique look. The entire left side of the mod is the firing bar, which also has RGB lights inside it.

The front-facing, full-color OLED measures 1.3” and has two regulatory buttons installed alongside it, which are also colored with RGB lights. The two buttons can light in different colors, ranging from red, blue, white, or a diverse medley of colors.

There is also a USB port on the front of the device for software updates. Users can install two, 21700 cells into the device via the hinged, battery-bay door on the bottom. With the battery adapters inside, they can also install two 18650 batteries, without any decline in maximum power output.

The high-power output of the device is 234W and even with two 18650 cells inside. The size of the mod, coupled with the two cells, means the device is a little heavier than most, although not by a lot. The mod does fit nicely in hand but is not the most comfortable to carry around in a pocket, especially with the tank attached.

iJoy Avenger Review: Kit Contents

The iJoy Avenger kit comes fully-loaded. There will be some kits that include two of iJoy’s 21700 batteries, but not all of them will. This is because some countries prohibit shipping packages with lithium-ion batteries, so some vapers will have to buy or use the cells they already have with the Avenger.

iJoy Avenger kit

With that said, other Avenger kits (without the two 21700s) will include the following:

  • 1 x Avenger 270 Box Mod
  • 1 x Avenger Tank
  • 2 x 18650 Battery Adapters
  • 1 x 0.35ohm X3-C1S Coil
  • 1 x 0.15ohm X3-Mesh Coil
  • 1 x Spare Glass
  • 1 x MicroUSB Cable
  • Spare Parts
  • Instructional Manual

The Look and Feel

The Avenger, despite the conceit of its voice-activated features, is very similar to other iJoy mods, like the Captain, which was also a dual-21700 device. Which is to say, the mod has a beefed-up look, much like a superhero from the franchise it takes its name from. Still, the mod stays below 90mm in height due to the size of the cells inside, so it is not awkwardly tall. It can be a handful, though. The mod sits comfortably in a closed fist and disappears entirely if it did not have a tank attached.

Battery Performance

The device takes two 21700 cells. Each cell can output a maximum discharge of 40A, and the mod can match those specs easily. Vaping the device anywhere higher than 200W would drain the batteries very quickly, even with low-resistance builds. Some devices do not always accurately output their maximum wattage.

iJoy Avenger

The Avenger lists its high-power output at 234W, although the more accurate reading would be an even 200W if vaping on a rebuildable, sub-ohm coil. The coils included in the kit have a range of between 40-90W, so they have a limited range. But if a vaper keeps in between that range on their pre-made coils, the battery life could extend to well beyond two or three hours of continuous vaping.

The iJoy Avenger Tank

The Avenger Tank is a sub-ohm that uses mesh-style coils. It has a low-resistance coil of 0.15-ohm, which is in keeping with the mod’s lowest resistance of 0.05-ohms, which is very low for a dual-21700 mod, as other mods only go as low as 0.06 or 0.08. The tank features stainless steel and heat-resistant glass construction.

There are two e-juice capacities. The pre-installed convex glass, or bubble glass, allows the tank to hold 4.7ml, while the second, straight-cut glass gives the tank a 3.2ml capacity. The tank has a gold-plated 510 pin on the bottom, and it also has dual, adjustable airflow vents at its base as well.

iJoy Avenger

The tank uses an 810-drip up top, which is also something not always seen on stock sub-ohm devices. The top cap is threaded, so users can easily remove it to access the two wide fill ports on either side of the chimney to refill the tank.

The coil is very easy to install, as well. It is bottom-installed, and users must first remove the coil base from the rest of the apparatus. After the coil base is removed, users can unscrew the coil from its threads and replace it with a fresh one. There are elongated juice ports along the side of the coil for users to prime their coils with a few drops of e-liquid.

Vaping in Wattage Mod

The stated high-power output of the mod is 234W, although, as mentioned before, the real rating, given that the amperage of the cells is 40V, is probably less. The mod can accommodate low-resistance coils that would be able to handle those 200W of power, but not with the stock coils included in the kit.

iJoy Avenger

The recommended range for the two stock coils is between 40-90W for the 0.15-ohm coil and 40-80W for the 0.35-ohm coil. With those coils installed on the tank, the mod ran smoothly. Pushing the output to 100W also produced satisfactory results, although going further than that to close to 150W was when the device started to lag.

Vaping in Temperature Control Mode

The two X3 Avenger coils in the kit are Kanthal and, therefore, not compatible with temperature control vaping. This does not mean users can build and wrap their own stainless steel, titanium, or nickel coils to use with the tank or mod. Attaching an RBA to the Avenger to vape in temperature control, users can select the mode via the screen options and then choose the wire of their choice.

The temperature range allowed by the internal chipset is between 200-600F. Vaping at the average value of 350F with a single, stainless steel round coil, the wicks did not singe, although there was some browning when the device vaped at closer to 400F. Users can try several coil builds and types, but this review used only the one build.

Users can also lock the resistance (a requirement with iJoy mods) and adjust the wattage in temperature control, by holding down the two adjustment buttons and then changing the value accordingly. Vapers can also set the resistance by attaching a new coil and then pressing the up/down buttons, so the mod automatically detects and sets it.

How to Use the Avenger?

Despite its attempt to look advanced, using the Avenger is not tricky. Installing the cells is easy, as users need only slide back the battery bay door and install their cells into the bay. The same goes for using the 18650 adapters, as users need to place the cells into the adapter and then insert it into the bay.

iJoy Avenger x3

The side-firing button, along with the two regulatory buttons, makes up the device’s control panel and accessing the menu options is not hard at all. The device uses the same five-clicks-on, five-clicks-off to activate the mod, which begins a colorful animation on the OLED. It also takes three-clicks to access the menu options, where users can:

  • Select their vaping mode
  • Adjust the light scheme
  • Input memorized settings
  • Set the power mode between hard/soft/normal/user

The power modes allow users to apply up to 30% more (hard mode) power to the set power or decrease it by 20% (soft). The “user” option allows vapers to set the power increased or lower using the four power columns on the screen.

The device has a ten-second cut-off time so users can benefit from the overheating protection. There are several other protections like short-circuit protection that displays an icon on the screen if the atomizer short-circuits.

Voice Control Option

Users have the option of turning on or off the Voice Control Option installed onto the device’s AI chip via the Settings icon on the main menu. Here, users can also reset the mod’s puff counter. When the Voice-Control function is enabled, users can activate the function by saying, “Hello IJoy.”

A small microphone icon will then appear at the top of the OLED, signaling the device is ready to receive instructions. There are a total of twelve different commands that users can enable via voice control. They include:

  • Locking or unlocking the device
  • Raising or lowering the wattage
  • Turning on or turning off the device
  • Change the color scheme
  • Turn on the lights of the mod

Are There Things I Need to Know About the Avenger?

There haven’t been many user-reported problems about the Avenger tank or mod. Perhaps the one complaint about the mod has to do with its main selling point – the voice-control feature. As with the touchscreen feature of past mods, the function may work well on other high-performing devices like smartphones and laptops, but it does not work as well on something like a mod.

iJoy Avenger x3

People may have to repeat some commands before the device responds, and if that is something that bothers you, then you can always turn off the feature. As for the rest of the device’s characteristics and functioning, most users report very little in terms of flaws or problems.

Updating the Avenger Software

iJoy did release a patch for the Avenger’s internal chipset. Users can attach the USB cable included in the kit into the mod and then their computer to install the patch. They should first take out the cells, so the device does not start charging instead of accessing the chipset.

When the chip and computer are paired, users can open the patch on their computer via their software and install the update. When the patch has installed successfully, you can unplug the device and start using it again.

The Competition

SMOK I-Priv

The SMOK I-Priv is the answer to the iJoy Avenger. It has many similarities, including the voice-control function, although the mod talks back, rather than performing the stated command. The I-Priv even has a similar form factor to the iJoy device with its puffed-up, muscly exterior. The I-Priv, however, is compatible with three different battery types, 21700, 20700 and 18650s.

SMOK I-Priv

The device can reach a high-power output of 230W and has a full temperature control suite, like the iJoy. It comes with the TFV12 tank and uses sub-ohm mesh coils rated for 0.15ohms.

iJoy Diamond

A brand-mate, the Diamond, is another dual 20700 device from iJoy that features a sharp-edged, multi-crossed form factor. The Diamond has an IWEPAL chipset inside that enables many of the same functions that are on this mod.

The Diamond can reach a high-power output of 234W, although the real output is probably less, like 200W. This mod comes with the Captain tank that can hold 4.3ml of e-liquid. It comes with three, pre-made X3 C-3, sub-ohm coils rated at 0.2ohms, 0.3ohms, 0.4ohms.

The VooPoo Drag 2

The VooPoo Drag 2 is a compact, dual-18650 device outfitted with the GENE.FIT chip. The device has resin inlay on both side panels, although one of them is removable so users can install their batteries. The device has a smaller form factor than the original Drag and can reach a high-wattage output of 177W.

The Drag 2 comes with the UFORCE sub-ohm tank that comes with a regular dual coil and a mesh-style coil. The unit has a small OLED on the side for users to make their adjustments, although this unit does not have a voice-control feature. The device does include wattage and temperature control, with users also being able to choose from three separate modes to save battery power, increase flavor, or increase cloud size.

Pros & Cons

The Positives

  • Fun, colorful exterior design
  • Easy-to-read screen
  • Menu options are easy to navigate
  • The coils produce excellent vapor
  • 18650 option
  • Customizable power modes

The Negatives

  • Voice-control options (it’s fun for five minutes, then, meh)

Final Thoughts: Age of the Avenger

The iJoy Avenger is a sturdy, fun-to-use dual 20700 mod. It is colorful and vibrant. The little “pulse” animation even gives the impression that it is alive. The screen is easy-to-read, and despite the AI chip inside, it is not complicated to use or vape.

Its color options and exterior design is sure to fire up the imaginations of creative vapers on what tank is best to pair it with. Whether they will be enthralled by the fact they can talk to their mod is another thing. Users will probably tire of having to repeat their commands endlessly, like talking to a disobedient dog so that the novelty will wear off sooner than later.

What do you think about the voice-control function on mods? Have you used one? What new features would you like to see on new mods? Let us know in the comments section below.
