A Look Inside at the Dovpo Topside Squonk Mod

All Dovpo Topside squonk mods come packaged in a hard-shell, plastic box with a slip-off cover that has the Vapor Chronicles logo cut into it. For example, the hinged base of the mod opens to allow for installation of the battery, like with many box mods.

Only there are two magnets on the base that vapers can use to hold the knurled top cap when refilling, so it does not get lost. The Dovpo Topside squonk tube has a separate plastic holder and slides into the bay on a track that lines the inside of the tube, so vapers know they are doing it correctly, which is something not all mods have.

It is those kinds of details that set the Topside apart from other mods. Those intricate touches make the Topside mod so popular, as well as its ease-of-use. On top of the mod, there is a spring-loaded 510 connection, with a soft, Delrin insulator surrounding it.

Right next to, and at about the same level as the 510, is the top cap for the Dovpo Topside squonk bottle. It does appear that the top cap is slightly raised about the 510, but they sit relatively side-by-side. Looking at the product, many vapers would wonder how exactly the e-liquid gets fed into the atomizer if the container is not sitting directly underneath it.

The answer to that question is one of the main innovations that the Topside has that others do not. There is a unique bridge connector that connects the vape juice container with the atomizer underneath the mod’s shell. The squonk bottle comes already attached through the connecting tube.

Whenever someone takes it out, there is no need to re-attach the bottle to the tube, as there is a small downward tube that enters into the juice container, and lines up with the connector tube, which is how a user feeds e-liquid into the atomizer. The same goes from removing the batteries; users do not need to remove the bottle.

The small liquid tube lines up with the juice flow hole when re-installed. There are two slotted screws on either side of the juice container that not only hold the Dovpo Topside unit in place, but create an air-tight seal to prevent leakage, and improve juice flow.

The Dovpo Topside squonk mod’s designer put a lot of thought into how to make the entire device leak-free. The squonk bottle holder features a stainless steel top cap that screws into the top of the bottle, to keep any juice from escaping.

The Topside squonk is a regulated mod, so it has an internal chipset that can fire as high as 90W. There is a side-facing, user interface that features a three-button configuration, along with a 0.96 inch OLED display. The outer frame of the mod features zinc alloy, and internal elements are stainless steel.

The shell of the holder is plastic, while the bottle itself is made from silicone. The control panel has some venting slots, which allows for essential battery ventilation, especially when the mod is firing at high wattages.

There is a small USB port for firmware upgrades on the side of the panel. The mod does not currently support temperature control, but there are plans to release a firmware patch that users can download to access temperature control on the Topside.

Getting It Started

Users need only unlatch the bottom-battery door to be able to install any size battery they wish, which is not so different from other mods. The standard battery options are 20700 or 21700, but there is a 18650 adapter in the vape kit that users can insert into the tube to turn it into a 18650 squonk mod.

The latch needs to be released to be able to access the battery bay. Some reviews have mentioned the difficulty in loading batteries or even opening the door, but the mod did not present such problems. Once the battery is in, users need only click the firing button five times to activate the device.

Since there are only two working modes loaded onto the device’s board, operating, or using the Topside is very straightforward. The OLED display, while small, is visible, and its information is presented in an organized, easy-to-read way.

The vertical line format displays info like battery life, amperage, wattage, and resistance. At the very top of the OLED screen, there is an icon that shows in which mode the chipset is set. To change from variable wattage mode to bypass mode, users need only hold down the power and down button.

The board moves fast. Users can adjust the wattage in increments of 0.5, but getting to 90W is no problem, as the Dovpo Topside Squonk Mod responds immediately. Since there are only two vaping outputs, there is not much to operating the Topside.

Setting an appropriate wattage, and things like locking the squonk mod (pressing and holding the two selector buttons) take little to no effort. There is a USB port for charging, although it is not recommended to charge batteries in the device. Vapers can use the USB port and accompanying USB cable to install firmware upgrades onto the board.

There is a fabled firmware patch that users can download to install a temperature control feature on the device. Some other reviews mentioned that installing the software did not work. There was no attempt here to install the patch, so no word on whether installing it works or not.

Filling the Bottle

The squonker that works with the mod has several exciting design features. Simplicity and a hassle-free vape were what the designer had in mind, and it shows in the final product, how closely he stuck to his ideas.

The bottle features three distinct pieces that help in its seamless operation. There is a stainless steel top cap that pops up when it is unscrewed, making it easier to remove it. It features a knurled exterior that has precision markings and gives users an excellent grip when taking it off the bottle.

Instead of threads, the top cap is divided into two sections. One seals the container from above. The other fits over the actual silicone tube and has the two fill-ports that users have to fill it with their e-juice of choice.

When placed over top the fill ports, the top cap forms a leak-proof seal, since two rubber gaskets cover up the ports, and tiny little tube plugs up the other hole in the lid. The holder uses two screws on either side to connect with the brackets of the tube holder.

Those two screws need to come off, to remove the interior silicone section, and then, users can remove the 10ml container. The screws are there to ensure an air-tight seal, as well as to prevent the tube from leaking.

When it is in place, users need only screw off the lid to expose the two fill ports. There are no max fill lines on the outside of the holder, so vapers can pretty much fill the tube to the top.

Only there may be slight leakage if vapers choose to fill up the tube to the top, as the hole plugged up by the top section could overflow. The silicone tube is such that it allows for the full 10ml to be used, so there are no problems for the container to suck up any remaining e-liquid left at the bottom.

Dovpo Topside Squonk Mod Review: Ease of Use

Vapers can attach any type squonk tank or RBA to the 510 connection that is under 26mm (1 inch) in diameter without any overhang. Vapers are limited to only two working modes for the Dovpo Topside mod to work, variable wattage and bypass mode.

In bypass mode, the Topside works like an unregulated mech mod. Vapers can use variable wattage mode up to 90W, although the resulting vapor makes it feel like maybe the device is firing at a little more than that.

No word on whether the choice of battery impacts the working life of the mod. Using the squonk mod with a 18650 cell gives the unit about the same battery life as any single 18650 mod. Using higher-capacity batteries does lead to more consistent power output.

Using a single 20700 cell, and a squonking RBA like the Dead Rabbit from Hellvape guarantees an impressive amount of clouds. The 0.3ohm fused Clapton coils in the RBA could easily handle the unchecked power of the battery in bypass mode.

In variable wattage mode, with a higher 0.5ohm coil, the well of the Dead Rabbit, which is deep, took a fair amount of juice. The pressure on the Dovpo Topside squonk was normal. The e-liquid did not come pouring out wildly. Users do not have to apply so much pressure to get it going. A simple squeeze with the thumb or tip of the finger and the juice flowed.

The Athena takes a single 18650 (only 18650 batteries) cell as its power source and has a self-adjusting 510 pin for compatibility with all types of squonk RBAs. The power switch does feature a locking mechanism to prevent misfires. The Athena has aluminum and stainless steel in its build and has no other regulation, so no screen or adjustment buttons.

The Pulse BF mod is another unregulated squonking mod that features a single firing/power button. The Pulse consists of a simple, square-box design that has two removable side panels, held in place with magnets.
