NJOY Brand Review: A History

Njoy brand Review image

NJOY was founded in 2006 in Arizona, although now they have offices in both Arizona and New York City. NJOY vapes first started making waves in 2010, with the release of the NJOY King premium e-cigarette that today would be classified as a cig-a-like, in vaping circles.

The King was NJOY’s attempt at replicating the look, feel and sensation of smoking an analog cigarette. By today’s standards, the King looks a bit dated, with its earnest attempt at trying to “look” like a real cigarette, mainly because of its white cigarette paper, and filter.

The King disposables were sold all over the US and came in three different flavors, Tobacco, Menthol and the King Gold that were also available in single packs, or either a pack of 3 and 5 from the NJOY website.
The nicotine content of the Kings was higher than other similar products, with all their formulations containing 4.5mg or 45% nicotine. The King line of disposables e-cigs brought NJOY their first taste of success, but also brought about their downfall.

In 2013, sales of the King brought in close to $90 million in revenue for the company. However, by 2016, the company declared bankruptcy. Sales of the King dropped as the e-cigarette industry grew, along with the technology, making their e-cigs near-obsolete. Common complaints about the King included their defective batteries and the poor, chemical-y taste of their e-liquid.

Since then, however, NJOY has remerged with a new line of modern vaping devices. Their original line-up includes pod devices that come with pre-filled e-liquid cartridges, as well as a redesigned, more futuristic-looking disposable e-cig.

The NJOY Line

#1 The NJOY Ace

A Pre-Filled Pod Device

10/10 icon-question Review score

The NJOY Ace is NJOY’s new, flagship pre-filled pod device that features a small 1.9ml pod with a battery section. There are four different flavors available for the Ace, which include Classic Tobacco, Cool Menthol, Watermelon Twist, and Blueberry.

The nicotine content of each pod is 5%. The battery section features a button-less design, and the pods are draw-activated.

Users need to first charge the Ace battery before using it, which can take between an hour and an hour and a half. The cell takes USB charging, and every Ace kit comes with a charging cable.

The pods are sold separately and come in packs of two. The pods last, according to NJOY, for 325 puffs.

A fully-charged Ace battery can last for up to 24 hours. The mod has a front-facing LED light that signals battery life, and when the battery needs charging. The USB charging port is on the base of the mod, while the top section is where you install the pods. The pods are fully-integrated and come with the liquid inside, as well as the mouthpiece where you inhale the vapor.

Pros:

  • Simple to use
  • Sleek, modern design exterior
  • Long lasting battery life (24 hours)
  • Convenient, compact and discreet

Cons:

  • Limited flavor options for the pods

#2 The NJOY Loop

A Portable, Stylish E-cig Case/Charger

9.5/10 icon-question Review score

The NJOY Loop is a portable charging/carrying case for use with NJOY’s rechargeable batteries and their accompanying flavor pods, which comes in five varieties. The entire kit consists of the 5.7g case, which has a battery capacity of 1000mAh; two NJOY batteries; a quick charge USB accessory, and a USB-C power cable.

The Loop has a flip-open top where you can install the two cells, whenever they need charging. The battery sticks can last between 35-40 puffs until they need a recharge. The Loop can charge a depleted battery in only 10-15 minutes, while in the case.

There are three LED lights on the side of the case, two of which show the battery life of either pod, while a third shows the battery life of the case itself.

As an added feature, the quick charge USB port has a magnetic connection and two slots to charge your batteries in any USB port. A fully-charged case can supply a total of 400 puffs for both sticks until itself needs to be charged which can take about two hours. The battery sticks themselves can last for around 30-40 puffs, while the life of the flavor cartridges depends on how often, and how long you vape.

Pros:

  • Very sleek, stylish exterior design
  • Super compact and portable
  • Inductive charging means you can charge the battery without removing the pod
  • Fast charge time for a depleted battery
  • The quick-charge accessory is also very convenient

Cons:

  • Replacement pods are a bit pricey
  • Some flavors are better than the others

#3 The NJOY Daily

A Premium, Disposable Cig-a-Like

9/10 icon-question Review score

The NJOY Daily is the replacement device for NJOY’s classic King disposable cig-a-like. There are still King cig-a-likes available on NJOY’s website, although there are more flavors for the Daily.

The device uses the same flavor pods as the Loop kit, but there is a different amount of flavors, seven in total.

There are two nicotine strength options available, for the pods, 4.5% or 45mg, and 6% or 60mg, the latter being the Extra brand of nicotine salts. The Daily eschews the traditional physical appearance of a cigarette for a more modern, updated design. It features a soft, rubberized exterior, as well as a soft-to-bite filter/tip.

There is still an LED tip on the unit, although it does not resemble the smoldering ash of an analog stick. The entire unit can last for up to 300 puffs, and the Daily is entirely disposable, so it is not intended to be recharged. You can buy the NJOY Daily disposable e-cig individually, or in a pack of ten from several online retailers.

Pros:

  • Sleek, modern design
  • Soft-to-the-touch
  • Nicotine salts e-liquid gives great throat hit
  • Inexpensive

Cons:

  • Short battery life

The ACE Pods and the LOOP Pods

The NJOY ACE pods and the NJOY LOOP pods are both, non-refillable, disposable e-liquid cartridges. The NJOY ACE pods can hold 1.9ml of e-liquid and have varying duration times. The ACE pods come in four different flavors:

  • Blueberry
  • Classic Tobacco
  • Watermelon Twist
  • Cool Menthol

While the flavor options for the 0.95ml LOOP pods are:

  • Blue + Blackberry
  • Classic Tobacco
  • Cool Menthol
  • Rich Tobacco
  • Tropical Twist

There are more flavor options for the Daily disposable e-cigs, only those devices are integrated, so you cannot remove any part of it. Each device has its proprietary flavor pod, so they are not interchangeable. Of course, like with Juul pods, the flavor capsules can be “hacked” so you can refill them with whatever e-juice you want but, honestly, it seems like less work and effort to buy new pods.

Customer Service

You can buy all NJOY products through their official website. Buying through the site though guarantees the amplest selection, as brick-and-mortar stores may not have all the flavors or devices in stock.

Within the United States, the company offers free shipping for all orders over $50. Delivery tends to take anywhere between 3-5 business days, as they aim to send out all orders between 24-48 hours from purchase.

By and large, customers tend to be satisfied by the level of service they get not only from NJOY’s customer service department but also the products themselves. NJOY offers a 30-day guarantee on all consumable purchases, namely the flavor capsules. On non-consumable products, they have a 1-year warranty from the date of purchase of delivery.

The Competition: NJOY vs. Mark Ten vs. the Juul

Mark Ten

Mark Ten was an e-cigarette manufacturer that made both disposable and rechargeable e-cigarettes. The rechargeable cig-a-likes featured a 90mAh battery and unlike the NJOY came with only two flavor options, Tobacco and Menthol.

The separate pieces screwed together in the middle, and each package came with a USB charger. Mark Ten also manufactured the Mark Ten XL, which was larger, and had four different flavors, Tobacco, Menthol, Fusion and Winter Mint. The Mark Ten brand was discontinued in late 2018 and is no longer available. For fans of MarkTen NJOY e-cigarettes might be a decent replacement.

The Juul

The Juul is a compact, e-cigarette device that uses pods pre-filled with a proprietary blend of nicotine e-juice. Like the NJOY Loop, the device has no buttons or any other interface, and it works with simple draw-activation.

juul-starter-kit-image

The vape takes USB charging, and every Juul kit comes with the device. Juul pods, as well as the device, are widely available, but online and in retail stores. There are currently seven different flavor pods, which run from Virginia Tobacco to Cucumber, to Fruit that have two nicotine strengths, 3%, and 5%.

Pros

  • A small product line with an emphasis on quality and durability
  • 30-day satisfaction guarantee and warranty on all products
  • Free shipping for orders within the US and over $50
  • Widely available both from online retailers as well as local shops

Cons

  • Small product line

The Final Word

NJOY is back. It was only in 2016 when the news of NJOY’s bankruptcy threw vapers for a loop. They also played a large part in fighting regulations from the FDA, as well as challenging anti-vaping legislation all over the country.

But it seems that not everyone gave up on them. NJOY has since undergone a makeover. It’s brand, and product line has transitioned into a more modern sphere that aims for a mass appeal similar to their main competition, the Juul.

Skimming through user comments and reactions in online vaping forums, you also get the sense that they are coming close to surpassing the Juul in both quality and popularity. Their focus on easy-to-use, straightforward, and stylish devices has gotten them noticed and may signal a brighter future for the company.

Do you think cig-a-likes and disposable e-cigarettes still have a place in the vaping world of tanks, mods, and open system designs (aka refillable and reusable)? Do you think that e-cigarettes and pod mods are the best for switching from real cigarettes? Let us know your thoughts on NJOY by leaving a few lines in the section below.
